About Safe Kids
Safe Kids Greater Houston, led by Texas Children’s Hospital was established in 1998 to work on a local level at preventing unintentional child injuries and deaths. Safe Kids Greater Houston is one of more than 600 coalitions in the United States under the direction of Safe Kids Worldwide. Safe Kids Worldwide was founded by the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
to prevent the number one killer of children ages 14 and under: unintentional injuries. Since the inception of Safe Kids Worldwide in 1987, the unintentional childhood injury death rate has declined 45 percent. When a child dies or is seriously injured the lives of families and entire communities are changed forever. But these tragedies don’t have to happen. The important thing to remember about preventable injuries is that they’re preventable. They often occur in predictable ways and can be completely avoided with the right education, awareness and planning. The goal of the Safe Kids Greater Houston Coalition is to address major areas of unintentional injuries to children 14 and under in our local area. This is accomplished by raising awareness among adults and children, providing life saving education and resources, and by making childhood injury a public priority. The major risk areas addressed by Safe Kids Greater Houston are:
Child Passenger Safety (Car Seats)
Home Safety
Fire Safety
Water Safety
Pedestrian and Wheeled Sports Safety
