We are q***r. We are trans. We are femmes. We are mothers, daughters, organizers, artists, aunties, voters, leaders, friends, and truth-tellers.

This Pride Month, Black Girl Caucus celebrates Black LGBTQ+ women and gender-expansive people who keep showing up, building community, shaping culture, and pushing for a world where all of us can live fully and freely.

Because when we say Black women first, we mean all Black women.

Happy Pride. We choose us. 🌈

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and one thing has become painfully clear: too many Black women are carrying heavy things silently while still being expected to hold everything together.

What started as a TikTok post about how depression hides in Black women turned into a sounding board of women sharing their own exhaustion, isolation, numbness, and quiet survival.

This post is a reflection on what those responses revealed, the pressure Black women face to always appear “strong,” and why honesty, softness, care, and support matter. It also offers a helping hand through a small set of resources that may be a starting point towards healing and restoration.

If this resonates with you, we hope you’ll read, reflect, and remember that struggling does not make you weak.

You are not alone.

As we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, we’re proud to have such a brilliant and remarkable leader as Dr. Chara Bowie stand alongside us in our BGC Leadership Circle.✨

Dr. Chara Bowie is the Deputy Director of Strategic Initiatives and Community Impact for Harris County Precinct 2. Her work focuses on advancing programs and policy across healthcare, economic development, homelessness, and early childhood development. She is also a dedicated community advocate, serving on multiple boards and commissions.

She joined the Black Girl Caucus Leadership Circle to be part of a space that inspires, uplifts, and unapologetically addresses the challenges facing Black women.

Recently, she was honored as one of the Top 50 Professionals & Entrepreneurs of Texas and continues to present research on the impact of mass incarceration on population health.

Her message to Black women:
“You do belong in that room! Your doubts are a manifestation of your own fears and the falsities that others want you to believe so that you don’t succeed.”

Major shout-out to for having our founder Sasha Legette as part of their panel discussion on Preserving Our Power in a Time of Erasure at the last weekend!

It was a wonderful discussion on protecting what belongs to us as a community, while systems are ignoring, removing, or rewriting our history, land, and voice.

The panel of extraordinary ladies shared ways to keep what’s ours when the world keeps trying to take it or make us forget it and it was a powerful conversation!

We’d like to thank Our Power Summit for welcoming both Sasha and our Leadership Member Dr. Rev. Stephanie Wilkins to their stage over the weekend. What an honor! 🖤✨
