REPUBLIC SERVICES TEAMSTERS LAUNCH STRIKE

This morning, 450 Republic Services workers represented by Teamsters Local 25 were forced on strike by the waste giant, inevitably disrupting waste collections for hundreds of thousands of residents throughout the Boston area. Primary picket lines could extend nationwide and result in a work stoppage for over 3,500 Teamsters.

Republic Teamsters are demanding a contract with improved wages, better benefits, and stronger labor protections. The multibillion-dollar waste corporation has refused to give workers a fair deal, pushing them to the picket line.

“If your rubbish is piling up on the Fourth of July, remember who’s responsible for it: the white-collar criminals who run Republic Services,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “Republic Teamsters didn’t start this fight, but we will finish it. Our members will do whatever it takes to finally get the respect they’re owed.”

Hundreds of additional Teamsters across the country are having similar contract disputes with Republic, and they could launch strikes of their own at any moment.

“This fight isn’t just in Boston,” said Victor Mineros, Director of the Teamsters Solid Waste and Recycling Division and Teamsters Western Region International Vice President. “From California to Massachusetts, Teamsters nationwide are dealing with the same problems with this company. If Republic doesn’t get its act together quickly, we will make an example of this employer for its mistreatment of our members. American workers deserve better.”

Teamsters Local 988 President Robert Mele, the Executive Board, and Business Agent Natalie Everett visited our members at Transdev Fixed Routes who operate the Northwest Facility for the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro Houston) on Friday afternoon. Earlier this year, members successfully ratified their strongest contract, securing unprecedented wage increases, Western Conference Pension Plan, and TeamCare benefits. Local 988 is proud of the 420 members who are vital to keeping Houston riders moving throughout the city.

Teamsters Local 174 has filed multiple official complaints with the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries after Costco Wholesale blatantly refused to pay fleet drivers the wages guaranteed under their collective bargaining agreement.

The group of 150 drivers, based out of Sumner, Washington, made history as the first group of Costco distribution drivers to join the Teamsters. They ratified their first contract in April 2025, securing wage increases retroactive to September 1, 2024. But months later, Costco has yet to pay a cent and has shown no signs of doing so unless forced.

The Teamsters are demanding that Costco immediately comply with the contract, pay all retroactive wages, and stop stalling. If the company continues to ignore its legal obligations, the Teamsters are prepared to fight.

More than 800 members of Teamsters Locals 38, 117, 174, 313, and 589 at Swire Coca-Cola have overwhelmingly voted to ratify new three-year collective bargaining agreements. The Teamsters coalition achieved a historic victory for the drivers, production workers, merchandisers, mechanics, and sale representatives who power Coca-Cola production and distribution across Washington state.

The new Teamsters contracts include record wage increases, improved pension and health care benefits, and greater seniority protections. This victory represents a significant achievement for the 33-member Teamsters bargaining team, who secured the best-ever terms at Swire Coca-Cola across the seven union contracts.
