Art & Environmental Architecture, Inc. (AEA) celebrates the successful completion of the Community Engagement Exchange (CEE) Fellowship of two remarkable international leaders: Mervan Γnen of TΓΌrkiye and Hezron Motoum of Papua New Guinea.
Over the past three months, Mervan and Hezron have become valued members of our team, contributing their expertise, creativity, and passion to projects that will shape the future of James Bute Park, Frost Town Historic Site, and the broader Houston community.
Through the Community Engagement Exchange Program, sponsored by IREX and the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, these fellows brought global perspectives to local challenges while sharing their own experiences in community development, environmental stewardship, design, and resilience.
Mervan's work in architecture and design helped advance several key initiatives, including the James Bute Park Pattern Book, user journey analyses, archival & documentary development efforts, historic housing research, and visual storytelling tools that will help guide future planning and interpretation efforts. His ability to connect design, history, and community visioning has strengthened our work in lasting ways.
Hezron's environmental expertise played a critical role in advancing the James Bute Park Opportunities & Constraints Analysis, Greenspace Management Plan, erosion control strategies, and environmental resilience planning. His thoughtful and hands-on approach to sustainability, ecological restoration, and community wellbeing helped us better understand how to protect and enhance one of Houston's most significant historic landscapes.
Together, Mervan and Hezron conducted research, engaged stakeholders, documented opportunities and challenges, developed planning recommendations, and helped tell the story of James Bute Park and Frost Town Historic Site through a lens of resilience, equity, and stewardship.
Their fellowship extended beyond AEA through collaborations with Friends of Columbia Tap, the Houston Innovation Corridor Rotaract Club, the Houston World Cup Sustainability Committee's Green Corridor Initiative, and numerous community leaders, advocates, historians, planners, and volunteers. Along the way, they participated in community cleanups, erosion control efforts, design workshops, stakeholder meetings, and public engagement activities that brought people together around a shared vision for Houston's future.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Community Engagement Exchange Program is the opportunity to build lasting relationships across borders. While Mervan and Hezron are returning home, the partnerships, friendships, and professional connections forged during their time in Houston will continue. Their contributions have helped advance important projects, and their impact will be felt for years to come.
On behalf of everyone at Art & Environmental Architecture, Inc., thank you, Mervan and Hezron, for your hard work, leadership, curiosity, and commitment to community-driven change. We are proud to have been part of your fellowship journey and look forward to following your continued success as leaders, practitioners, and changemakers in your home countries and beyond.
