Before Juneteenth became widely recognized across the nation, Prairie View alumni were already helping preserve its meaning.

Charles Joel Robinson, one of Prairie View’s first-generation graduates and possibly a member of Prairie View’s “Unknown Eight,” helped carry the legacy of freedom forward through education, service, and civic leadership.

On June 19, 1883, Robinson organized a Juneteenth celebration in Burleson County that included a parade, music, speakers, local churches, youth groups, and a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation.

His story reminds us that Juneteenth is not just a date. It is a legacy — remembered, honored, and passed on.
