Just 2 more days until the opening of Sacred Web: The Artistic Lineage of John T. Biggers! Biggers founded Texas Southern University’s art department in 1949 and helped shape one of the nation’s most important programs for Black artists. One unique aspect of Biggers’s pedagogy was his emphasis on his students becoming teachers. In fact, several of Biggers’s students went on to become colleagues and faculty at TSU; this included Harry Vital, Leon Renfro, Charles Criner, Harvey Johnson, Jesse Sifuentes, and more. Dozens more of Biggers’s students went on to teach at other schools and universities throughout the US. Join us this Friday from 6-8 for an opening reception celebrating this new exhibition! 3 days until the opening of Sacred Web: The Artistic Lineage of John T. Biggers! In 1957, Dr. Biggers received a UNESCO fellowship to study in Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, and Dahomey (now Benin), making him one of the first African American artists to travel to Africa. This experience sparked a lasting fascination with West African designs, symbols, and cosmologies. He had started work on mural, Web of Life, prior to the trip, but its themes and designs were shifted by the world he was exposed to in West Africa. Biggers was especially drawn to creation stories that emphasized inherited bonds across generations. Join us this Friday from 6-8 for an opening reception celebrating this new exhibition! We are only 4 days from the opening of Sacred Web: The Artistic Lineage of John T. Biggers at the University Museum at Texas Southern! John Biggers was the founding chairman of the art department at Texas Southern University, where he taught for more than 30 years and influenced countless young artists. Biggers is commonly known for painting large murals that highlight African American life, community, and cultural heritage, often using symbolic imagery such as quilts, shotgun houses, and family scenes. Visitors to TSU’s campus can view three original murals (Web of Life, Family Unity, and NUBIA), as well as outdoor recreations of two more paintings (Quilting Party and Jubilee: Ghana Harvest Festival). Join us this Friday from 6-8 for an opening reception celebrating this new exhibition! Free parking available in Lot F, access via Ennis St. Image shows John Biggers studying the artwork of Henry Wilson, archival photograph courtesy of Earlie Hudnall, Jr.

You won’t want to miss this! Sacred Web: The Artistic Lineage of John T. Biggers will be on view at the University Museum at Texas Southern between June 13th and August 9th. Recognized for its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and deep narratives, Dr. John T. Biggers’ work reflects the nuances of African American life and history. Drawing inspiration from West African traditions, spirituality, and the rich collage of Southern culture, his art continues to resonate with audiences today. His influence is deeply woven into Texas Southern University (TSU), where he served as a professor and founding chair of the art department, shaping generations of artists through his dedication to education, cultural expression, and artistic excellence. Inspired by Biggers’ discussion of Ananse in Ananse: The Web of Life in Africa, Sacred Web examines artistic lineage as a living web of relationships, mentorship, shared knowledge, and creative exchange. This idea of interconnectedness appears throughout his life and work and serves as the foundation for this exhibition and dedication. As we celebrate Biggers’ artistic genius and humanity, this exhibition honors a living philosophy carried forward through generations of artists at TSU and beyond, reminding us of the power of creativity to connect communities, bridge generations, and deepen our understanding of the shared human experience.
