Our Story

The Common Market is a mission-driven local food distributor working to create a robust, resilient and regionally-based food system. Our mission is to connect communities to good food from sustainable family farms. We strive to improve food security, farm viability, and community and ecological health. We provide the infrastructure, technical and marketing assistance to bring local, sustainable farm products to institutions and the communities they serve.

Vision: We envision a nation composed of vibrant regional food systems where interdependent urban and rural communities thrive through relationships that build the health and wealth of all people.

Community: Rooted in community since our founding days, we believe in the potential to build collective power through collaboration across an interdependent food system. Diversity: We believe that all environments thrive with greater cultural and biological diversity. The Common Market embodies this value in our organization and all of our relationships throughout the food system. Local Investment: We believe that by building the strength of regional economies, we can promote equitable health and well-being in urban and rural communities.

Regional Impact – Through our partnerships with farmers, institutions, and families we are working to build a more equitable food system that is safe and fair for all. We believe that everyone deserves access to fresh, local, delicious food and that farmers deserve to be fairly paid. Our work is aimed at providing healthy and local food to low-income communities where access to healthy fresh food is scarce, hunger is high, and diet-related diseases are prevalent. At the same time, we will serve the entire Houston, TX area and its surrounding communities to improve the health and well-being of all.
