Experts estimate that only one in five eligible patients are consistently participating in surveillance programs, despite clear recommendations for regular monitoring. This is particularly alarming considering that most people who develop hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of primary liver cancer, already have liver disease. Common Heart Medication Shows Promise Against Liver Cancer

Liver cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, but a new study shows the solution to targeting this difficult-to-treat disease may already exist.

Yatendra Singh, a postdoctoral researcher in the University of Mississippi Department of Biology, found that plant-derived cardiac glycosides – compounds that are commonly used in heart medications – show promise to fight hepatocellular carcinoma. This study provides a clue: Here's what happened when researchers investigated how sugary drinks affect the all-important detoxification organ.

A study published in Jama Network found that those who drank one or more sugar-sweetened beverages daily had an 85% higher risk of liver cancer and 68% higher risk of mortality due to chronic liver disease compared to those who had three or fewer sugar-sweetened beverages per month.

Once imaging confirms a diagnosis, doctors assess the size, number and location of tumors, as well as whether they involve major blood vessels or bile ducts.
