Neighborhoods to Trails Southwest

Neighborhoods to Trails Southwest For more than 10 years we have advocated for safe, off-street hike and bike trails in Southwest Houston neighborhoods. And what about Houston?

In order to become healthier places to live, cities such as London, Paris, New York, Brussels, Chicago, and Guangshou are seriously working on putting pedestrians and cyclists before motorists. Some are well on their way, according to the September 2015 issue of The Economist. Even Los Angeles is engaged in serious planning. How can Houston become a more livable city with increased access to gree

n space?

The Bayou Greenway 2020 project of the Houston Parks Board principally plans to create a connecting network of 150 miles of hike and bike trails along the major Houston bayous. Most of the trails will run east/west along the bayous. At this time there are no plans for north/south trails to connect to the bayou trails. There is a need in southwest Houston for trails connecting to the Willow Waterhole Green Space Park, the planned Levitt Pavilion, and connecting trails within Brays Oaks Management District that will permit area residents easy and safe walking and biking access and reduce the reliance on cars and parking space.

What do y’all think? Just checked out the progress on Brays Bayou Greenway under Beltway 8 connecting to Arthur Storey Park. It seems possible that Houston Parks Board might make their June 7 estimated completion date. I’m an optimist, but there has been big weather to slow them down. We’ll let you know when it’s done.

Public Safety Concern: The lower trail on Brays Bayou under Chimney Rock is slightly underwater and almost underwater going east to Rice. The rains over the weekend will come and go, and the water can rise quickly. The young woman who slipped into the bayou and drowned during recent flooding was near this area. To keep safe, let’s avoid the lower trails during big rain events, even when there is a pause in the rain.
Be careful out there. Houston Parks Board Office of Commissioner Lesley Briones, Precinct 4

This state-wide cycling network is a dream at the moment, building on some existing trails. We are trying to find out how to encourage this into reality. Within our area in Houston, it seems that the Brays Bayou Greenway Trail and Keegans Bayou are represented as part of a "connecting spur". Unfortunately, the Keegans Bayou Trail currently ends at Kirkwood, and this connecting spur is shown as jumping to W Belfort and going west.

We're advocating for continuing west along Keegans Bayou into Fort Bend Co and ultimately connect to an E-W Centerpoint right-of-way. That first application didn't succeed, and so we'll try again, and again.

Did you know there is a bicycle tourism trail network planned for Texas? The future connection of tourism bikeways will provide recreational and travel opportunities for local Texans who enjoy casual rides, alternative routes to work and school, or even some cycling adventure. Perfect morning for a ride from Greater Meyerland to MacGregor Park by UH. Cool weather, low wind, lots of birds, flowers, turtles.
So grateful for all the lower level trails along Brays Bayou Greenway that avoid stops at intersections.
