This morning, I opened Messenger to find a response from Charlene Minnic regarding my post seeking a Black student photographer/videographer to assist the Noir Black Chamber of Commerce Inc.
Charlene, I applaud your efforts to eliminate racial discrimination and promote equal opportunity. At the same time, I want to respectfully explain why we intentionally seek opportunities for Black students and young people.
The Noir Black Chamber of Commerce Inc. is a Black-created and Black-led organization whose mission is centered on “Moving Black America Forward.” Part of that mission means intentionally creating educational, career, business, and professional opportunities for the next generation of Black Americans.
The reality is that Black students and young people still do not have equal access to the same economic opportunities, professional networks, resources, and pathways to advancement as many of their peers. Until those disparities no longer exist, we will continue doing our part to identify, develop, support, and uplift Black youth.
Our efforts are not about diminishing opportunities for anyone else. They are about making sure Black young people have meaningful opportunities to develop their talents, build their résumés, establish professional relationships, and prepare themselves for successful careers.
And Charlene, should you come across career, educational, internship, mentorship, or professional development opportunities that could benefit Black youth, please feel free to share them on social media. And don’t be afraid to put “Black” in the candidate description when the purpose is to intentionally reach and uplift young people who have historically been underserved and underrepresented.
We will proudly continue doing the work of Moving Black America Forward by investing in our next generation.
