Is it a large rat 🐀? Is it a beaver 🦫? No, it’s Nutria!
Nutria are invasive, non native rodents that are often mistaken for muskrats 🦦 or beavers. They can be seen at Exploration Green Conservancy eating entire plants and roots 🍽️ of native wetland plants 🌱.
Why are they considered invasive?
🔹 They live in burrows connected by tunnels dug near rivers, canals, and lakes, causing erosion and flooding.
🔹 With the root system gone, the soil becomes unstable, leading to erosion.
🔹 They eat up to 25% of their body weight daily but destroy up to 10 times more plant matter than they actually consume by uprooting entire plants.
These species were NOT introduced to Exploration Green, but like many species, came due to the semi-aquatic habitat and food supply.
