Exploration Green

Exploration Green Exploration Green is a 200-acre public green-space located in the heart of Clear Lake, dedicated to conservation

In 2011, the Clear Lake City Water Authority (CLCWA) purchased the defunct Clear Lake Golf Course property with the intention of creating a state-of-the-art storm water detention and retention system. This was necessary to mitigate serious local flooding potentials exacerbated by more than 40 years of residential and commercial development that preceded modern stormwater detention technology. The

Water Authority envisioned using the land for community beautification and recreation as well as water detention. In a series of Town Hall meetings, the community rallied around a movement to restore the treasured green space to a more natural state. Based on this groundswell of support, CLCWA has developed a 12- to 15-year, five-phase plan to create an exemplary stormwater detention system that also improves local quality of life as a premiere park, conservation and outdoor recreation space. Subsequently, the Exploration Green Conservancy (EGC) was established as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization to shepherd the beautification and recreation aspects of the project. In 2014 the CLCWA established a Conservation Easement in partnership with the Galveston Bay Foundation, ensuring that Exploration Green will remain permanently secure from future commercial development. The same year, an on-site wetlands plant nursery was established with the Texas A&M Coastal Watershed Program to grow plants to eventually be used in the filtration of stormwater run-off. Additionally, in partnership with the nonprofit Trees For Houston, an on-site tree nursery was created to provide the property with native species trees.

Is it a large rat 🐀? Is it a beaver 🦫? No, it’s Nutria!

Nutria are invasive, non native rodents that are often mistaken for muskrats 🦦 or beavers. They can be seen at Exploration Green Conservancy eating entire plants and roots 🍽️ of native wetland plants 🌱.

Why are they considered invasive?

🔹 They live in burrows connected by tunnels dug near rivers, canals, and lakes, causing erosion and flooding.
🔹 With the root system gone, the soil becomes unstable, leading to erosion.
🔹 They eat up to 25% of their body weight daily but destroy up to 10 times more plant matter than they actually consume by uprooting entire plants.

These species were NOT introduced to Exploration Green, but like many species, came due to the semi-aquatic habitat and food supply.

For more information on this these invasive rodent visit Texas A&M AgriLife Nutria, an Invasive Rodent Factsheet.
