To the tribe:
Raising, supporting, loving, and fighting for men and women on the spectrum carries a world no one else can ever see nor imagine. To these mothers, "patience" is not just a word; you are the very definition of it through every action you take.
To the mothers who learn a different language—a different way of teaching by touch, by leading, by prompting, and by deep abiding respect—you are not JUST a mom.
You are a human’s entire world. You are their connection to silent conversations no one else understands. You have learned how to unlock a "God code" that only you and your child know and silently speak.
May God bless you, mom warriors. You fight so many wars that others call "fight or flight," but to you, it is the daily survival of your child you fight for.
Happy Mother’s Day to the warriors. 💙

On Tuesday, the IACC voted to send recommendations to HHS that could lead to meaningful support for families. Here’s what those recommendations could mean if adopted.

From our original sponsor 💙 National Autism Association:

Not everything is behavioral. Sometimes, the gut is a big part of the story.

Join Martha Carlin (Register https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Zh8AcMhcSQqy1AZSNOJGdQ #/registration as she draws on over two decades of research and real-world experience to explore how microbes act as an “information system” in the body—shaping digestion, immune function, metabolism, and even brain signaling.

This session focuses on practical, foundational steps—supporting digestion, improving diet quality, and strengthening oral hygiene—because small, consistent changes over time can make a meaningful difference.

**One of the hardest parts of being a special needs parent isn’t the appointments, the therapies, or even the constant advocating.

It’s the prolonged loss of autonomy.

Because when you become a parent, you expect to lose some of that. You expect the newborn phase to consume you. You expect sleepless nights, constant touch, always being needed.

And you hold onto the quiet promise that, eventually, little by little… you’ll get pieces of yourself back.

But when your child has significant or ongoing needs, that phase doesn’t end.

That same level of dependence—the one people tell you is temporary—becomes your baseline.

Your normal. Your forever.

And it touches everything.

Your time is no longer your own.
Your body is not fully yours.
Your plans are always tentative.
Your energy is rationed carefully, because it has to be.

Spontaneity disappears. Rest looks different. Even your identity shifts, because you are constantly adjusting around what your child needs to survive, to function, to thrive.

And here’s the part people don’t always say out loud:

You can love your child with everything you have… and still grieve the autonomy you lost.

Both things can exist at the same time.

This life asks more of you than most people will ever understand. Not just in moments—but across years, across decades.

So if you’re feeling that weight—the invisible, ongoing surrender of self—just know you’re not alone in it.

And it’s okay to name it.

Why we do what we do... children with severe autism become adults with severe autism and there is little help out there for most families.
From Eileen Lamb...
"Today’s doctor appointment with Charlie was one of the hardest I’ve ever had.

He hit the doctor. He spit on the nurse. He broke the computer mouse, ripped up the exam table paper, and I spent the whole appointment apologizing while trying to keep everyone safe.

By the end of it, we were discussing antipsychotic medication and residential placement. The doctor called our neurologist office and managed to get us an appointment for TOMORROW - bypassing a 6 month waiting list.

On top of everything, his BMI is 14.5. First percentile.

This is the part people don’t see when they talk about autism like it’s just a personality trait or an identity. Some of us are trying to survive doctor’s appointments where our child is so dysregulated that basic medical care turns into crisis management.

Shoutout to the staff who was incredibly kind to me. They told me I was doing a great job, and I’m holding onto that tonight because days like this can make you feel like you’re drowning even when you’re doing everything you can.

This is profound autism."
