“At schools within Miles’ New Education System – the center of his reforms – students were much more likely to complete college-prep courses. Some students described being enrolled en masse, even when they had already earned college-ready credentials. Several said they rushed through the self-paced coursework, which can take up to a semester, in a few hours. Others said they still had to take remedial classes in college — the very outcome the courses were designed to prevent.

In fact, the TEA concluded in 2025 that virtually all college-prep courses failed to prepare students for college-level academics. Most graduates marked college-ready exclusively through college prep still had to take remedial coursework to pass their first year of college, the TEA found. Because of that finding, the state will no longer count most college-prep courses toward school ratings by 2028”

We know many of you had a difficult start to the school year. We have put together some intentional events and resources to help us all get through the school year 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫. We can do this! Here is more information on our events and trainings:

1. 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞: You are invited to walk with HFT in the Houston Pride Parade this Saturday, August 15, 2026! More details & RSVP here: mobilize.us/hft/event/995728

2. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠: Are you new to teaching or new Houston ISD? Are you an experienced teacher, but need some support? We are offering a 3-series course designed to support novice educators and reinvigorate the career educator starting this Tuesday, August 18. This open to all Houston ISD educators! 3. 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩: This workshop will be held virtually on Wednesday, September 2. This workshop places educators at the center of the debate on compliance over motivation, autonomy and an examination of how conventional structures (rewards, sanctions and punishments) are in place primarily to keep order. This SSS module explores how growth mindsets, grit, peace building, compliance, autonomy, educator behaviors and classroom layout all affect the learning environment. RSVP here: mobilize.us/s/D6g6dW
