I spent approximately 40 years in Houston, Texas chasing the fast life in the entertainment industry as a nightclub promoter and business consultant. I moved to Houston to rebel against a conservative Christian upbringing, and did that with relish, living selfishly and arrogantly. At 52 years old, I had a crisis of conscience, and found myself to be spiritually, morally and emotionally bankrupt. I began to re-discover faith in a different way as an adult, and decided to explore the exact 180 degree opposite of my life, I spent 5 1/2 years in a world I was very unfamiliar with, I discovered the dark side, I discovered a world where good was bad and bad was good, I saw extreme ignorance and poverty for the first time in my life, one year turned into 2, 2 years turned into 5 1/2, while I was there, I saw people in total despair and hopeless, I saw how all of life's Trials and Tribulations not checked can lead to destruction of the Human Spirit, It shocked and angered me, I began mentoring and teaching people that with hope, knowledge and given a Second Chance anything is possible, I returned to Houston to help them. Once I stabilized my life, I founded Saving Us By Us: A 2nd Chance. theboydfoundationinc.org

2nd Chance Initiative

A long road:

The 2nd Chance Houston-based initiative aims to transform inmates into trust worthy, hard working employees and entrepreneurs through counseling, job preparedness, re-training and self evaluation; it also challenges society to rethink the criminal justice system. It was normal to wake at five in the morning and work until five or six in the evening. If you can be successful in Prison, you can be successful in the real world. Breaking cycles
We think it’s actually a crime to release someone after ten years and just say ‘Good luck!’”

Avoiding crime is only one challenge prisoners face, other obstacles awaiting individuals upon their release are court fees, insurance costs, debt and often broken family bonds. Even seemingly trivial things can become problematic. Choosing what to eat, what time to go to sleep at, learning how the internet works and how to behave in traffic can prove challenging. The longer someone has been imprisoned, the harder it gets to find their way back into society. Inside prison they are stripped of every right and become less fit for life outside.

Many prisoners also feel rejected by society once they are released. Prejudice, intolerance and stereotypes abound; this affects those who have used their time in prison effectively as much as those who have not.
Academics and criminal experts underscore the responsibility society has in taking part in the rehabilitation process. Trusting ex-prisoners to turn their lives around can turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy. 2nd
Chance prepares ex-prisoners to return to society and become a productive citizen, parent and a welcomed member back into their families.
