Axiom Quartet

Axiom Quartet Axiom Quartet is a proudly Houston based string quartet whose music is as diverse as its native city. Thomas in Houston, TX.

The Axiom Quartet is a dynamic and passionate professional ensemble based in Houston, TX. The group is known for creating and performing programs that mix classical string quartet repertoire, classical transcriptions, new compositions, and popular rock, electronic, indie, jazz and pop genres. The quartet members each have vast solo and collaborative performance experience, and as a group, they ar

e Artists-in-Residence for the Music Preparatory School at the University of St. Because of their passion for expressive music from across the Western tradition, Axiom Quartet concerts are fresh and exciting to a wide range of audiences; they turn classical fans on to extraordinary popular music, while serving as classical music advocates to contemporary music fans. This formula has proved successful on a local and semi-national level. Their concerts in Houston are frequently sold out, they have also been invited as first ever classical string ensemble to play at the natural cave (Cave Without A Name) in the Texas Hill Country. The Axiom cave concerts are routinely sold out and garner critical acclaim. Most recently the Axiom Quartet has signed with the Parma Recordings label, and will be releasing their first CD in the fall of 2017. They are in high demand for performances, and they have received accolades and recognition from local press and institutions. The Axiom Quartet serves as outreach ambassador for Chamber Music Houston (formerly Houston Friends of Chamber Music), one of the country’s top chamber music presenters. The CMH sponsorship allows the Axiom Quartet to perform their programs in the communities, where access to live music is limited.

Our album, “Open Source,” is now streaming and available for purchase via Navona Records and all other digital platforms. Composed by Karl Blench with a libretto by Jacqui Sutton and featuring baritone Timothy Jones, this 32-minute work tells the origin story of First Congregational Church of Houston, one of the city’s first congregations to welcome people of color during the civil rights era. We couldn't be more proud of this project.

Help us celebrate by joining us tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Keller Hall (1703 Heights Blvd.) for a special “Open Source” video album watch party. Beer and wine will be served, and we welcome cash donations for the Sangerbund in thanks for their generous support.

What if a piece of music could hold your questions—
the ones about belonging, truth, and being heard?

Open Source was created with the First Congregational Church of Houston inspired by its radical idea: that many voices together
can create something more honest, more human.

This is music for the searching.
For the lost, the hopeful, the in-between.

On Friday, April 10, Axiom Quartet releases “Open Source,” a 32-minute work for string quartet and baritone voice that tells the origin story of First Congregational Church of Houston. “Open Source” is a collaboration between Axiom Quartet, composer Karl Blench, librettist Jacqui Sutton, and baritone Timothy Jones.

For Jacqui Sutton, there was only one source material for the libretto: A grainy, 1970s VHS interview of the founders of FCC describing their inspiration and intentions for the church. It would be an inclusive sanctuary modeled after the New England church in-the-round, and the first church in Houston to welcome people of color during the volatile civil rights era. Their ethos embraced going beyond “dialogue” to engage in what they termed “multilogue” — and exchange across religious beliefs and practices. This brought to Sutton’s mind the term “open source.”

Timothy Jones is one of the leading baritones of his generation, praised for his commanding vocal presence, intelligent musicianship, and rare ability to connect deeply with audiences. Throughout “Open Source,” Jones inhabits the mindscapes of wandering and sitting still, of the humorous and the somber, of the lost and the found.

“There’s a moment at the very end where Jones sings the words ‘pure love,’” says Blench. “When I first heard that, I almost started crying. When the music comes across that well, it makes the journey worth it.”

Throughout the score, Blench draws inspiration from his small-town upbringing in western Massachusetts and the spirit of composer and fellow New Englander Charles Ives, and like Ives, Blench masterfully interweaves traditional and original musical materials. For the conclusion of “Open Source,” Blench quotes “Wherever I May Wander,” a children’s song in the FCC’s church hymnal, with new lyrics by Sutton that include the words:

“What we’ve made is
an incubator of love.
Inspired from above.
Of love.
From above.”
