Looking back on the 13th annual last month, we’re reminded why closing out Sunday together has become a powerful NBFJA tradition. Our session, Unyielding: Black Food Sovereignty in Action, brought members, farmers, and organizers into deeper analysis of this moment and renewed our shared commitment to organize, build and resist especially as we face the widening reach of state violence.

Deep gratitude to Carolyn Baker of the for grounding us in Detroit’s organizing legacy and reminding us that liberation is and always will be a collective practice.

As we face these times together, we ask: what new systems of care, cooperation, and sustenance can we build when we trust one another more than the state?
This year’s session, Unyielding: Black Food Sovereignty in Action, brought members and organizers into deeper conversation about conjunctural analysis; and together, we strengthened our commitment to local and regional organizing.

Deep gratitude to Carolyn Baker of the for grounding us in Detroit’s organizing legacy and reminding us that liberation is a collective practice.

🌱 Thank You to Our Heritage Sponsors! 🌱

What a weekend, fam! The BUGs Conference wouldn’t be possible without the continued support this year's incredible Heritage Sponsors The National Black Food and Justice Alliance and Why Hunger. Your partnership helps us cultivate spaces where learning, healing, and community take root — and ensures that each year’s conference is a powerful, inspiring experience for everyone who attends.

From all of us at BUGs: thank you for investing in Black land stewardship, food sovereignty, and intergenerational connection. Together, we grow stronger. 💚

Hey BUGs fam- we'll see you shortly. But to make your arrival easier, here's what you need to know:

Parking at Wayne State
Parking is available at Parking Structure 1 (Palmer Structure), 450 W. Palmer (between Cass Ave and 3rd Ave).

Enter through Gates 3, 4, or 5.

Cost: $9 per day (credit card only — Visa, Mastercard, Discover accepted).

Once parked, follow the signs past the Law School and Damon J. Keith Center. A short walk will bring you right to the McGregor Memorial Conference Center.

Ride Share
If you’re arriving by Lyft/Uber, set your destination as:
McGregor Memorial Conference Center, 495 Gilmour Mall, Detroit, MI 48202.

You’ll be dropped off on W. Ferry Ave near the College of Education. Walk onto Gilmour Mall toward the blue statue — McGregor will be on your right.

We know parking and navigating a new city can be stressful, so we want to keep this simple and clear. Once you arrive, the energy of the BUGs community will take care of the rest.

Safe travels — see you soon!

BUGs Fam-

As we prepare for tomorrow's farm tours, we want to share a few important reminders to ensure that our visits are respectful and sustainable for the farms hosting us.

Getting There: What to Know
Farm tours are only accessible via the BUGs charter buses. This policy is in place to honor the capacity of the farm sites, protect limited parking, and respect the neighborhoods welcoming us. For that reason, please do not drive to the farms on your own or arrive at the pick-up/drop-off location expecting to use personal vehicles for transport.

Sold Out Tours & Waitlist
If a tour is sold out, conference-goers are encouraged to sign up for the waitlist through Whova (more information coming soon) or in person at the conference. You are also welcome to arrive at the pick-up location on Friday morning to join the waitlist in person. Please note: participation is not guaranteed until just before departure, as we will accommodate attendees with tickets first.

We appreciate your cooperation in following these guidelines. By traveling together, we can honor the farms’ capacity, maintain good relationships with our community partners, and ensure everyone has a safe and meaningful experience.

With gratitude,
The BUGs Conference Team

We are honored to announce the keynote speaker for the 13th Annual Black Farmers & Urban Gardeners (BUGs) Conference: Tepfirah Rushdan 🌱✨

Rooted in Detroit’s fight for land, food, and environmental justice, Tepfirah has spent more than 15 years leading organizations including Greening of Detroit, Keep Growing Detroit, Sowin’ Seeds Community Garden, Black to the Land Coalition, Detroit People’s Food Coop, and the Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund.

In 2023, she became Detroit’s first Director of Urban Agriculture, and today, as Director of the Office of Sustainability, she ensures that farmers remain central to the city’s climate and resilience strategy. Through the Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund, she has helped secure nearly 19 acres of land for 80 Black farmers — a revolutionary act of Black liberation and food sovereignty.

Her leadership embodies the spirit of BUGs, and we cannot wait to welcome her to the keynote stage. Join us in Detroit, October 3–5, to hear her vision for the future.
