Married Ladies Social Art & Charity Club

Married Ladies Social Art & Charity Club The Married Ladies Social, Art & Charity Club of America was founded in 1902 by a group of women with shared commonality. The idea got little support.

The purpose of the organization centered on root issues which affected their communities and themselves. Boldly, they began to engage in charitable, benevolent and social undertakings in Houston, Harris county, and Texas; to provide educational opportunities for the youth, the elderly, the community, and to inspire its members along intellectual, industrial, and artistic lives. In the beginning "ma

rried, living with husband" was a requirement for membership. In 1932, the ladies of the club paid cash for an acre of land off Montgomery Road in the Acreage Homes Addition to build and "old folks home." In 1957, the ladies worked and purchased a home for the Club at 1902 Berry. The city bought the property in 1966 for the building of Highway 288. In 1966 the proceeds from the sale were used to buy the Club's present home at 1814 Southmore in what is now referred to as Houston's Museum District. Through the years the organization has been consistent in giving scholarship aid to college students, academic tutoring for students between ages five and fifteen, and donating services to charitable and educational causes.
