Five trailer loads of invasive privet down! 🌿🚜💪

On September 12, an incredible crew of 17 volunteers stepped up at Cedar Hill State Park, logging a massive 68 volunteer hours of hands-on habitat restoration!

Our team stayed safe, healthy, and hydrated while tackling an aggressive, overgrown privet thicket right by park headquarters. By clearing out five full trailer loads of this invasive shrub, our crew opened up space for native Texas plants to thrive and made a visible, lasting impact on the park grounds.

Projects like this prove that when our community comes together, we can make quick work of massive conservation challenges. A huge thank you to everyone who spent their Saturday morning sweating for our public lands!

When floodwaters leave behind years of damage, our community steps up to clear the path. 🌲🛶💪

We just held our inaugural volunteer project at Village Creek State Park, and our crew made an incredible start on a major recovery effort! Over the years, repeated flooding events have taken a heavy toll on the park’s trail system—tearing up wooden boardwalks, washing out access ramps, and burying pathways under thick layers of storm debris.

With park staff, Get Outside Alliance stepped in, mobilizing our volunteers towards getting these trails back open to the public!

Where our volunteers started the work:
• 🪵 Began clearing heavy storm debris and fallen timber off the tread near the back parking lot and cabin loops.
• 🔨 Started rebuilding and repairing damaged boardwalk decking and access ramps washed out by past high water.
• 🌿 Cleared encroaching invasive overgrowth to begin reopening safe, clear trail corridors along the creek.

Restoring trails that have faced years of flood damage isn't an overnight job—this recovery work is actively ongoing, and our first day was all about laying the groundwork!

Our final open volunteer project of September is happening this Saturday, September 19 (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM) at Purtis Creek State Park—and registration is closing soon!

🌲🌊If you’ve been looking for a reason to get out of the house, trade screen time for trail time, and do something meaningful with your weekend, this is your sign. We’re heading out along the water for a morning of trail maintenance and shoreline cleanup to keep these East Texas pathways healthy, accessible, and clear for everyone.

What you need to know:

• 🧤 Tools, work gloves, and cold water provided!
• 👟 Closed-toe shoes required.

DFW and East Texas, let’s close out the month on the trails! We’re heading to Purtis Creek State Park this Saturday, September 19, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and we want to pack the crew to the max!

We’ll be out along the water and through the trees doing trail work and shoreline cleanup to keep Purtis Creek’s paths safe, clear, and beautiful for park visitors and local wildlife. 🌲🌊
