BayouVoices is a community site developed by the students of Yates High School under the supervision of photography teacher Ray Carrington and Third Ward resident and homeschool student Breanna Cotton under the supervision of Carroll Parrott Blue at University of Houston. This site has been developed for the people of Houston’s Third Ward, Southeast Houston, and beyond as a collaboration that incl

These projects provide outreach to the community through participation and programs in community meetings, workshops, listening sessions, performances, planning studies, and publications. Primary funding for these projects has been provided by Houston Endowment, National Endowment for the Arts, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with additional support from the University of Houston, Houston Advanced Research Center, and the Dawn Project.

Programming is the art of telling a computer what to do through a set of instructions. Those instructions are written in a computer’s language, or code. We use computers all the time—even turning off the alarm clock or texting a friend. Becoming a programmer is one of the best ways to have an impact on the world because you can influence so many people’s lives with the things you make.

Heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and stroke are among the most common causes of illness, disability, and death in the United States. These chronic conditions—and the factors that lead to them—can be more common or severe for minority groups. FYI:
- Non-Hispanic blacks are 40% more likely to have high blood pressure than are non-Hispanic whites, and they are less likely to manage this condition.
- The rate of diagnosed diabetes is 77% higher among non-Hispanic blacks, 66% higher among Hispanics, and 18% higher among Asians than among non-Hispanic whites.
- American Indians and Alaska Natives are 60% more likely to be obese than non-Hispanic whites.
- Life expectancy for non-Hispanic blacks is 75.1 years, compared to 78.9 years for non-Hispanic whites.
