Madam C.J. Walker created hair care products and built a nationwide company.

She didn’t just earn money; she created jobs.

Every young person deserves a chance at financial independence, especially those transitioning out of foster care. Without a safety net, financial literacy becomes not just valuable, but vital.

At Crayons and Coins, we provide foster youth with real-world financial tools; from saving and budgeting to credit and investing. We’re not just teaching them to survive; we’re empowering them to thrive and build wealth that lasts.

Your support helps ensure these youth are no longer overlooked, but fully equipped.

From the Spanish peso came not only our dollar, but also the $ symbol, believed to have come from the abbreviation “ps” for pesos. Hispanic heritage is literally built into the money we use every day.

Hispanic heritage is deeply connected to money and financial history:

The U.S. dollar itself was modeled after the Spanish silver dollar (peso de ocho), showing the lasting impact of Hispanic culture on our nation’s currency.

Several Hispanic leaders, like Rosario Marín, the first Mexican-born U.S. Treasurer, have left their signature on U.S. money, marking history with representation and pride.

Today, Latino-owned businesses are among the fastest-growing in the country, fueling innovation, job creation, and community wealth.

At The Crayons and Coins Financial Literacy Foundation, we believe financial literacy is part of honoring this legacy. By teaching the next generation how to save, invest, give, and spend wisely, we are continuing a tradition of resilience and building pathways for generational wealth in every community.

✨ This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s celebrate the cultural richness and financial strength of the Hispanic community and recommit to empowering our youth with the tools to create brighter financial futures.
