Throughout his career, Bill has paired professional leadership with a deep commitment to Houston, serving organizations including KIPP Houston and KIPP Texas - Houston, SEARCH Homeless Services, the Houston Food Bank, the UH Bauer College of Business , and American Leadership Forum Houston/Gulf Coast Chapter.

His work reminds us that courageous leadership is also about using our experience and relationships to strengthen the communities around us.

On September 16, we're welcoming Darrell Teat, CEO of CXORE and a Senior Fellow from ALF Mountain Valley Class 27, to Houston to lead "Kaizen Leadership: The Power of 1% Better Every Day" — an interactive workshop built on the idea that small, consistent growth creates extraordinary results.

We are so saddened to share that Joe Russo, a beloved member of our Senior Fellow community, passed away on August 14. He was 94.

Joe was in ALF Class 1. Before this community became what it is today, he was one of the people who helped it become something.

His legacy in Houston is immense. You may not know Joe's name, but most of us have dialed 9-1-1 at some point. That system exists, in large part, because of Joe Russo. He helped build it, bringing together 35 police and fire departments and first responders across multiple counties into one coordinated team. More than 10,800 calls come through every single day. He called it the greatest gift he ever gave this city.

He was a real estate developer, a civic leader, a man of deep faith, and a devoted husband to Sally for 67 years. He is survived by his four daughters and their families.

A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, August 20 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Rd., Houston, TX 77056. The family requests donations to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.

What a beautiful way to honor a legacy of service and leadership — by investing in the next generation. ❤️

Today, members of our ALF community gathered at the University of Houston-Downtown to celebrate the launch of the Harry Gee Jr. Endowed Scholarship, honoring the life and legacy of ALF Senior Fellow Harry Gee Jr.

This special initiative was led by Senior Fellows Donna Cole and Nancy J. Li, who brought friends and community together for a luncheon celebrating Harry and the establishment of a scholarship that will carry his impact forward through future UHD students.

This is what leadership and legacy can look like: people coming together, honoring someone who has made a difference, and creating an opportunity for others to thrive.

Congratulations to Donna, Nancy and everyone who helped make this meaningful tribute possible. And most of all, congratulations to Harry — a legacy worth celebrating! ❤️

What a wonderful celebration of ALF Senior Fellow Chuck Wemple as he closes an extraordinary chapter of service to our region!

After more than 22 years with the (H-GAC), including eight years as Executive Director, Chuck is heading into a well-earned retirement. Throughout his career, he has helped strengthen regional collaboration and bring communities and leaders together around some of the most important issues facing Greater Houston.

And, of course, the ALF community was out in full force to celebrate him! We loved seeing so many Senior Fellows there honoring a fellow Senior Fellow, colleague and friend.

Chuck, thank you for your leadership, your commitment to public service and the many ways you have strengthened our region. We can’t wait to see what this next chapter brings. Congratulations! 💥

An event from Bridges - Faith, Action, and Community

Every clergy member has taken a phone call they were never trained for.

A family whose son was just arrested. A congregant who was robbed and doesn't know whether reporting it will make things better or worse. The justice system touches our communities constantly. Most of us learn how it actually works after the fact.

On Wednesday, August 26, Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare will join Civics and Clergy at Bayland Community Center. He will speak for about 20 minutes on the challenges he is navigating and what he is working to accomplish. Then the time belongs to the room: bold questions, straight answers from the DA.

You will also hear about the criminal investigation into the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.

This is a nonpartisan gathering open to clergy, board members, and congregational leadership. It is not a political event. It is what it looks like when faith communities and civic institutions decide to stop talking past each other.
