No one asked for this but I made it anyway

I didn’t know I was going to wake up and cry.

I think as a country we all need a good cry and a big hug.

😭

(1/6) “When we arrived on the scene it was chaos. The second tower had just been hit. The sound of sirens was deafening and the air was filled with what looked like confetti. There was no command structure so everyone had to figure out what to do on their own. I paired up with Tommy Jurgens; we worked at the courthouse together and had come over on a jury bus. As we crossed over Vesey Street Tommy made the sign of the cross, and I did the same. We walked through a big wet spot which we didn’t realize at the time was human remains. The entrances to the towers were closed because of the jumpers, so we entered through Building Five and found a passageway leading to Tower Two. On our first trip we found a civilian with a head laceration and escorted them back to the triage center. On our second trip we did the same with someone who was clearly having a heart attack. On our third trip we came across two other court officers— Mitch and Harry. Mitch had run ten blocks from the Canal Street Subway station. Harry had come over from the Court Officer Academy. He was a captain, a real spit-and-polish guy. I looked up to him; I’d taken a few of his classes at the academy. So when he joined us I felt a sense of calm, like: ‘OK, everything’s going to be alright.’ We pushed our way to a shopping mall area beneath Tower Two, and that’s where we found a badly burned young woman standing with her arms extended. Her hair was singed. Her pink top had melted to her body. She told me her name but I immediately forgot, and it would be almost a year until I heard it again. She was clearly in critical condition, so I told Tommy, Mitch, and Harry that I would take her back to the triage center. They continued ahead to find other victims while I strapped her into a stair chair and began pushing her back the way we came. We probably made it 100 feet when someone screamed behind us: ‘Get Down!’ Then there was a horrible sound. You know the rumbling and screeching sound that a subway makes when it takes a sharp turn? It was a combination of that, and explosions.”

Chicken update.

I was working in really terrible conditions without realizing it.

Very important to keep a clean studio.
Today I did a deep clean and quickly tried to underglaze this wobbly chicken.

Enjoy my blooper content. I couldn’t figure out how to end the video .. so I did it awkwardly.

I’m not doing particularly well at getting back into clay.

And then I have to remind myself… I got back to Texas on Saturday, very jet lagged, very sleep deprived, and somehow decided Sunday was a good time to jump straight back into pottery. 🤪

Living between two worlds is a beautiful privilege , I know but it can also be incredibly discombobulating. One minute I’m in England with one rhythm, one home, one version of my life… and then I’m back in Texas trying to pick up where I left off two months ago.

My brain hasn’t quite caught up with my body yet.

So this week isn’t about getting back into the swing of things. I think it’s just about giving myself a little grace while I catchup.

The clay will still be here. 🤍

PS: Why is it so hard to give ourselves the same grace we’d give someone else?

I know you all were wondering. What happened to the chicken?
Well it’s drying and will see how crazy I end up illustrating it.

Remember it has to survive a lot.
Drying
Bisque fire
Glaze fire.
In 2 weeks time we will know if it’s a total disaster. 🤪

Sometimes I wonder what the point of sharing any of this is.

Maybe it’s this.

I was misdiagnosed more than once. Overmedicated. Spent years trying to understand my own mind. There were times I genuinely didn’t think I would make it to 50.

I’m 54 now.

And my life is beautiful.

Not perfect. Not magically healed. But mine.

There has been a lot of therapy. A lot of healing. Zero medication now. A very small circle. A husband who has become one of the safest places I know.

But somewhere along the way I realized something else.

Before him, I had learned to become a safe place for myself.

Maybe that’s why I keep sharing pieces of my life here. The gardens. The art. England. The ridiculous projects. The ordinary little moments that probably don’t look particularly important from the outside.

Because there was a version of me who had no idea she would get to have any of this.

So maybe this is for the person who can’t see very far ahead right now.

Hang on a little longer.

Stay here with us.

Your story is still moving, even when it feels completely stuck. You have absolutely no idea where you might land.

I certainly didn’t.

And God, I’m glad I stayed. ❤️

I actually sent this video to a friend 😂

She’s one of my creative friends who regularly gets these little dispatches from inside my brain, random thoughts, half-formed ideas and general creative nonsense.

Thought I’d let you in on one too. 🤭

P.S. Jet lag. No idea when I last washed my hair, sleep schedule is off. My body hurts from inflammation but I’m doing great🥴
