1. Black eyes peas, ham and cabbage are considered good luck if you eat them on New Year's Day.
2. In Italy, people wear red underwear on New Year's Day to bring them good luck all year long.
3. To ensure a year of good luck, fireworks and noise makers became traditions in order to scare away any remaining evil spirits and to ensure a new start.
4. In Akita, Japan there is a tradition called Namahage where grown men dress up as demons to scare children into behaving for their parents. They go from house to house yelling "Are there any crybabies at home?" or "Are naughty kids around?"
5. Lobster and chicken are considered bad luck food to eat on New Years. According to superstition, a lobster's ability to move backwards and a chicken"s ability to scratch itself backwards, if you eat either on New Year's, you won't be able to move forward. Hence the bacon for luck!
