In 2025, HAA entered a new era of leadership and collaboration. Taylor Jackson became the first woman and person of color to serve as CEO. HAA also partnered with Artists for Understanding in Houston, a federal initiative using arts and culture to counter hate and foster inclusion and partnered to launch the first annual Greater Houston Arts Forum.

That momentum continued in 2026. Houston City Council unanimously approved a new Hotel Occupancy Tax contract with HAA, and the organization expanded its Disaster Services Division into the Resilience & Recovery Division, broadening its support for Houston’s creative community.

A fireside chat featuring Michele Leal, Director of the Houston Mayor’s Office of the Arts; Sergio Selvera, Board Chair of Houston Arts Alliance; and Sixto Wagan, Executive Director of Houston in Color, will explore HAA’s role in that evolution and how we are continuing to strengthen our support for Houston’s artists and arts organizations.

This free event is open to the public and will feature light bites from Lucille’s and beverages provided by Silver Eagle Houston.

Congratulations to the Let Creativity Happen and City’s Initiative Round 1 2026 grantees!

The City of Houston Mayor’s Office of the Arts (MOA) awarded $223,185 through two competitive grant programs to support 61 artists and nonprofit organizations whose projects will bring arts and cultural experiences to communities across Houston. Administered by Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) on behalf of the Mayor’s Office of the Arts, the grants are funded through a portion of the City’s Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT), meaning every paid stay in a Houston hotel or eligible short-term rental helps generate funding to support the arts.

After Hurricane Harvey, Houston Arts Alliance launched the Ready and Resilient program to strengthen Houston’s arts and cultural community before another disaster.

That work continued as HAA partnered with area arts organizations to create an emergency fund during the COVID-19 pandemic and reactivated it following the arson attack at Winter Street Studios.

In 2023, the City of Houston and HAA introduced the Creative Impact Boost Formula within HAA’s grant programs, providing additional funding to artists and organizations from historically underrepresented communities.
