League of Women Voters of Houston

League of Women Voters of Houston We are a nonpartisan political organization serving Harris County by encouraging everyone to participate in the civic life of our community.

Our trusted, non-partisan outreach works to encourage active and informed participation in government and to increase understanding of major public policy issues. We sponsor candidate debates and forums, town-hall style seminars on important public issues, voter registration drives, election information outreach, and of course our fabeled Voters Guide to the Election and the Candidates. We never endorse or oppose any candidate or political party. And we've been at it since 1920!

🚨 PUBLIC COMMENTS CLOSE TONIGHT! 🚨The price of U.S. citizenship could jump 75% under a proposed federal rule.

Application fees would rise from $760 to $1,330. The cost to appeal a denial would rise from $830 to $1,475. And fee waivers and reductions for low-income applicants would be eliminated entirely.

The people this affects have already met every requirement the law asks, years of lawful residence, background checks, the English and civics tests. Under this rule, the only thing left standing between them and citizenship would be the price.

The rule isn’t final yet.
Public comments are open through August 24 at 11pm CST, and every comment has to be reviewed.

We’ve written a letter you can use, scan the QR code or find the link in our bio. It takes about three minutes to submit.

Eligibility — not income — should decide who becomes a citizen.

LWVH is a nonpartisan organization. We do not support or oppose any candidate or political party.

Tonight at 11:59 p.m., the 2026 Midterm Houston Voters Guide closes to candidate submissions.

What happens next is the part most people don’t see: every response goes into translation, layout, proofing, and print. We plan to produce 70,000 copies to be distributed free through libraries, schools, community organizations, and local media across Harris County by early October, well ahead of early voting.

Every candidate in a race receives identical questions, in identical order, with identical character limits. Responses publish exactly as submitted; unedited. Participation is free!

The League of Women Voters of Houston does not support or oppose any candidate or political party. A legacy a century old, that we are serious about upholding.

Candidates: if your invitation never arrived, Email [email protected] with the best email address and we’ll resend your link tonight.

Everyone else: if you work with, know, or support someone on the November ballot, forward this. Down-ballot races are where voters have the least information and where a completed entry does the most good.

August 18, 1920. 💜
The 19th Amendment is ratified.

The League of Women Voters was founded six months before the ratification of the 19th amendment, by the very suffragists still fighting for ratification.

Carrie Chapman Catt proposed the idea of LWV as the next chapter of the movement at NAWSA’s 1919 St. Louis convention, and the national suffrage association transformed itself into the League of Women Voters, a civic educational organization.

This history runs straight through Houston. The Equal Suffrage League of Houston was organized in 1903, after Catt herself came to speak here. Then Minnie Fisher Cunningham led the Texas Equal Suffrage Association out of its Houston headquarters, lobbied Congress for the amendment, chased down governors to secure ratification in Texas. She then helped organize the national League and became its first executive secretary. Texas became the 9th state, and the first in the South, to ratify.

Same women. Same fight. New chapter. 💪🏽

When the Texas association dissolved, the League of Women Voters of Houston rose in its place, and we’ve been at it ever since!

106 years later, we’re still doing exactly what they set out to do: make sure every voter knows how to use their power.

The questions are out. 🗳️

Candidates on the November 3 ballot have received their 2026 Houston Voters Guide questionnaires, and the submission deadline is Monday, August 10.

The questions come from a nonpartisan committee process. Answers are published word for word, exactly as candidates write them. We don’t edit them.

Their words. Your decision.

Candidates: check your inbox for your Vote411 link. No link? 📧 [email protected]

Everyone else: 🔁 Share this. If you know someone on the ballot, a neighbor running, a friend’s campaign, send them this post. One share can fill a blank space in the guide.

✅ Full-time, exempt, flexible hybrid schedule
✅ $50,000–$55,000 + employer-paid health benefits, 401(k) match, and PTO
