Chester Street Foundation

Chester Street Foundation Chester Street Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit charity focusing on children's mental health. Trauma remains wired in the body and brain.

Chester Street Foundation was established in 2017 to shine a light on the invisible wounds of childhood trauma so that children receive the treatment they deserve. Our strategy to fulfill our mission is to educate our community on the science behind the emotional reactions to trauma and the ways to help traumatized children heal and recover. It’s not just about hurt feelings and troubling emotions

; it’s much deeper and is rooted physiologically. Whenever it triggers its victims, it causes them to relive the panic and terror of their original trauma over and over. These wounds are not visible to the human eye, but they are very real and left untreated can cause chronic health issues which last a lifetime. We believe education is a critical component to helping traumatized children on their road to recovery and have designed our TraumaTALKS programs for the community at large and professionals who are on the frontlines of this issue, including, mental health professionals, educators, and organizations working with children. TraumaTALKS are high-quality trauma-informed-training and professional development presentations, featuring Chester Street Foundation’s Founder and CEO, Shawn Alex Nemeth (a trauma survivor ), along with other licensed mental health professionals. TraumaTALKS are offered as live presentations and through On Demand videos.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we want to say one thing clearly: the work doesn’t end on May 31st. ✨

Every training delivered, every educator equipped, every parent supported, every child seen — that’s a year-round commitment. And it’s only possible because of people like you.

If our mission to shine a light on childhood trauma resonates with you, please consider supporting our work. A gift of any size helps us reach more children, more caregivers, and more communities with trauma-informed care.

Thank you for walking this road with us.

Last month, we had the privilege of leading a self-care training with the Children’s Defense Fund — and the feedback left us so encouraged. ✨

100% of participants said the session gave them strategies they could apply to help themselves become regulated.

100% would recommend the training to others.

One participant shared:
“Thank you for your informative session. I definitely felt a sense of calm when we finished and will be implementing the practices covered today.”

This is exactly the ripple effect we hope for: caregivers and professionals walking away with tools that don’t just live in their notes, but in their lives. Thank you to the CDF team for opening the door.

Quick reminder for our educators, clinicians, foster parents, and frontline professionals: ✨

Our Could it Be Trauma? training is available both in-person and on-demand — designed to enhance your clinical ability to identify the often subtle, yet pervasive, effects of childhood trauma and integrate evidence-based strategies to support a child's path to recovery.

If you’ve been waiting for a moment to bring this training to your team, we’d love to hear from you. (And if you’ve taken it before — we’d love to know how it’s shown up in your work.)

This Memorial Day, we honor the service members who gave their lives in service to our country, and we hold space for the families and children who carry that loss forward.

Grief in childhood is its own kind of trauma. The kids of fallen service members are walking a road most adults can’t fully imagine, and they deserve every bit of trauma-informed support our communities can offer.

Today, we remember. Tomorrow, we keep showing up. 🇺🇸

May is also Women’s Health Month, and women’s health includes mental health.

Research from the American Psychological Association shows that women who experience trauma are roughly twice as likely as men to develop PTSD. That statistic isn’t about weakness — it’s about how trauma, biology, and societal pressure intersect, often beginning in childhood.

The good news: with trauma-informed support, healing is absolutely possible. For the women in your life — and for yourself — please know there is help, and there is hope.

None of this work happens alone. ✨

Our Collaborative Partners Program brings together organizations who share our commitment to trauma-informed, child-centered care. Together, we extend the reach of training, resources, and healing into the communities that need it most.

We’re excited to share our new Collaborative Partners brochure — take a look and see what partnership with Chester Street Foundation can look like for your team.

May is Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month — a time to honor the histories, contributions, and resilience of AAPI communities. ✨

Trauma-informed care has to be culturally informed care. Stigma around mental health, family expectations, language access, and historical trauma all shape how AAPI children and families experience and seek support.

We’re committed to learning from, partnering with, and amplifying AAPI voices in this work, so that every child has a path to healing that honors who they are.

Happy Mother’s Day to every mom, stepmom, foster mom, kinship caregiver, and mother-figure showing up for a child today. 💛

Showing up, even on the hard days, even when you’re tired, even when the work goes unseen is one of the most powerful forms of healing a child can witness. You are doing more than you know.

If today is heavy for you, we see you too. Grief, complicated relationships, and longing don’t take the day off. Be gentle with yourself.

Today is National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. ✨

Children can experience PTSD. They might not have the words for it yet — but their bodies, their behavior, and their nervous systems often speak loudly when something is wrong.

The CDC outlines what PTSD can look like in kids: trouble sleeping, irritability, avoidance, withdrawal, and sudden changes in behavior. Knowing the signs is the first step in helping a child heal.

This week (May 5–11) is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week — a reminder that the wellbeing of moms is inseparable from the wellbeing of their children.

When a parent is supported, regulated, and resourced, kids feel it. When a parent is struggling, kids feel that too. Maternal mental health isn’t a “side issue,” it’s central to how the next generation grows up.

If you’re a mom carrying something heavy right now, you are not alone, and asking for help is one of the bravest things you can do.
