Nationwide EAS Test Tomorrow

On November 9, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. Central Standard Time (CST), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will conduct the first-ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS).

This 30-second test is intended to assess the reliability and effectiveness of the EAS as a way to alert the public of national emergencies. At the appointed time, all television and radio stations throughout the nation will simultaneously broadcast the EAS tones as well as a message that the system has been activated at the request of the Primary Entry Point, Washington D.C. The message will be preceded and followed by verbal confirmation that the exercise is only a test.

Please be aware that this is only a test and that there is no actual emergency associated with this exercise and no need for alarm. Residents are discouraged from calling 911 or other emergency management agencies to report the brief interruption of regular broadcasts as these calls may detract from their ability to adequately handle life-threatening situations.

Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) will be monitoring the test in the Emergency Operations Center along with partners from FEMA, FCC, Greater Harris County 9-1-1 and other local partners. HCOHSEM remains at Level 4 – Normal Readiness.

More information about the EAS Nationwide Test can be found at www.fcc.gov/nationwideeastest.
