Today, we commemorate , a profound moment in American history that marks the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, freedom finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

As a Jewish organization committed to justice, equity, and remembrance, we stand in solidarity with the Black community. Our allyship has been a longstanding area of meaningful support. Let us honor this day by reflecting on the past, listening deeply, and working toward a future rooted in dignity for all.

Impact Moment: Federation-partner World ORT recently brought an Israeli robotics team to Houston for the First International Robotics Championship. The team of 42 students from Dimona received the inaugural “Spreading STEM” Award.

In 2025, thanks to your generosity, we granted $30,000 to World ORT from our Annual Campaign. Founded in 1880, World ORT is one of the world’s most far reaching Jewish educational networks, serving 80,000 students annually across more than 30 countries. We are proud to share the work of Robert M. Beren Academy Lower School Counselor Nicole Rzonzew who is also a part of our School Counseling Network. She recently published an article with Prizmah about building connection with students.

As the convener of Jewish Houston, our networks bring together our schools, synagogues, and institutions for resource and idea sharing.

In the article Rzonzew wrote: "As a school counselor, I have learned that the lens through which we see students changes everything. When we are disconnected from a child, behavior quickly becomes defiance. Silence becomes apathy. Forgetfulness becomes laziness. Emotional dysregulation becomes manipulation. We begin interpreting students through frustration instead of curiosity. But connection changes the story."

Impact Moment: We recently awarded $244,600 in security microgrants from our Joan and Stanford Alexander Family Community Security Program to help our local synagogues, schools, and organizations cover the cost of security personnel. This was made possible with generous support from our Board of Trustees. Fifty local organizations received grants, and we received many heartfelt thanks. We are pleased to share some of these testimonials with you. 💙
