Honoring Juneteenth means making space to remember the past, celebrate progress, and continue learning together.

Our SEARCH team came together for a Summerfest Cookout with lunch, an open mic for staff to share reflections, personal stories, historical insights, poems, quotes, and song lyrics, followed by a viewing of the PBS documentary Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom.

We're grateful to everyone who contributed their perspective and helped make the day full of connection, reflection, and community.

L.G.’s journey with homelessness began when he was just a child.

For decades, he survived however he could, working when opportunities came and staying in shelters, abandoned buildings, with friends, and sometimes on the street.

Everything changed when L.G. connected with SEARCH and moved into one of our housing programs. With a safe, consistent place to live, stability began to take root.

Today, L.G. carries gratitude and optimism into each day, a reminder that it is never too late for life to take a different path.

There was a lot of excitement leading up to our trip to Galveston, especially for those who had never been or ridden a ferry before. Everyone showed up ready for the beach, and the ride there felt like a classic road trip filled with music and anticipation. We stopped for a meal together, something many shared they hadn’t experienced in a long time.
Crossing the bridge onto the island, participants were amazed by the view, taking in the vast water for miles. On the ferry, early nerves quickly turned into excitement as they explored, asked questions, and even spotted a shipwreck for the first time.
When we arrived at Crystal Beach, we set up and took in the moment, with some seeing the ocean for the very first time. Before long, the group was along the shoreline, collecting seashells and calling out to each other to share what they found.
The afternoon brought space to rest, connect, and reflect, with stories shared about both past experiences and where life is now.
By the end of the day, there was a deep sense of gratitude, with many sharing that it was a day they would always remember.

We loved being part of the BNF Poker Tournament and spending time with such an incredible group of partners.

Building New Foundations continues to show up for our House of Tiny Treasures community not only through generous support, but by volunteering at events like Splash Day and Earth Day and building real connections with our students and families.

It was also great to connect alongside fellow nonprofit partners like Hearts with Hope Foundation and Hope’s Path.

Thank you BNF for helping create more opportunities for the children and families we serve.

Juan never imagined he would experience homelessness. After losing his job during the pandemic, Juan faced a series of challenges, mounting debt, health struggles, and caring for his ill mother, that eventually left him without stable housing.

For years, Juan moved from place to place, including time spent living in a storage unit. Everything began to change when he connected with SEARCH.

Within months, Juan moved into one of SEARCH’s housing programs, where he finally had a safe place to focus on his health, rebuild stability, and begin planning for the future.

Today, Juan’s story is a reminder that housing is more than shelter; it creates the foundation for healing, dignity, and hope.

For years, Thinisha described her life with one word: “existing.”

She experienced homelessness starting at just 13 years old, spending decades navigating survival without stability or support. But after being connected to housing, she finally had something solid to build on. She gained stability, reconnected with her children after 18 years apart, and started building a future that once felt out of reach. Today, she’s a peer support specialist, helping others find their own path forward.

That foundation made it possible for her to rebuild her life, reconnect with her family, and step into a new role helping others who are facing similar challenges.

Her story is a reminder that with the right support, a different future is possible. We’re grateful to walk alongside our clients through every step of that journey.

Big milestones start with small steps.

At the House of Tiny Treasures, 14 young students celebrated their graduation surrounded by the people who helped them grow, learn, and thrive. Families, teachers, and community partners all played a part in this moment, and it showed in every smile in the room.

This is what it looks like when a community comes together to support children and build a strong foundation for what’s ahead!

"When you’re struggling, it’s easy to feel like you don’t matter.”

For LaShawna, experiencing homelessness brought moments of doubt, humility, and uncertainty. At SEARCH’s House of Tiny Treasures, she and her children found more than support for her kids. They found care for their whole family. With access to resources and a community that showed up for both parent and child, LaShawna was able to rebuild stability for the future.
