We are FULLY FUNDED for our upcoming trips to Project Dance Houston and Project Dance New York City!

When we prayed about attending these conferences this season it was a big unknown if we would be able to raise the funds for traveling to three states. But where God directs, he opens doors.

Through the incredible generosity of 28 individual donors, our artists got to bless the community of Jackson MS (photographed by Barbara Pendleton) and are about to embark on a trip to Houston Texas to reach the people there. In April we’ll head to NYC.

To each person who gave: Your financial support has given us an opportunity we did not expect and we are prayerfully stepping out in faith that the Lord will work through us at each upcoming conference.

Last day of staff announcements, Sarah Matzke is also teaching another class Embodied Theology Lab!

Sarah Matzke holds a Master of Fine Arts from Jacksonville University and Bachelor of Arts from Southern Methodist University. She has served as professor of dance at TCU, University of Texas at Dallas, and Störling Conservatory. Matzke’s pedagogy weaves somatic movement with postmodern practices, inviting participants into greater understanding of themselves and the world around them. As a guest artist, she has worked throughout the United States, South America, Southeastern Asia, and the Middle East (www.sarahmatzke.art).

Embodied Theology Lab is a designated space for deep personal and spiritual analysis. Participants are guided in somatic movement - gentle improvisation that integrates the whole body, soul (mind/will/emotions), and spirit in creative discovery. The internal sensations, perceptions, and experiences of the body are encouraged. This time focuses on the dynamic relationship of Creator and Created as explored in our bodies. Open to all levels. No previous dance training or experience is needed. Journals are recommended.

Next, we have the incredible Shizu Yasuda!
Shizu Yasuda is originally from Japan. She joined Ad Deum Dance Company in 2004 and became a principal dancer in 2006. Since then, she performed and toured with the company nationally and internationally until she retired in 2014. In 2013, she was invited as a guest performer and judge by Chelz Extreme Games in Minsk Belarus. As a dance educator, she has been serving as a modern and contemporary dance instructor in the Houston Dance Community at places such as Ad Deum Dance Company, Houston Ballet Academy Summer Dance Intensive, Mitsi Dancing School, Vitacca School for Dance, Studio of Dance (Robert Underwood), West University Dance Center, and Houston Academy of Dance. She is also an American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum certified teacher in pre-primary level to level 5 and received ABT Affiliate Teacher Award in 2018-2020. She currently is an adjunct professor of Dance at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida.

Contemporary Choreography will include movement phrase work in Shizu’s signature style which blends elements of her training in Japanese styles of dance with more contemporary fall and recovery based movement influences. Heavily leaning into the use of breath, rhythm, focus, and dynamics as tools to communicate and engage.

Next, we have the fantastic Jeanna Vance!

Jeanna Vance received her dance training at the Grand Rapids Ballet and Houston Ballet Academy. For the first decade of her career, she performed with many Houston-based companies and was privileged to be a founding member of Ad Deum Dance Co. under the direction of Randall Flinn. As a young artist, Jeanna was also welcomed into the Interactive Theatre Company, where she fell in love with unruly audiences and the endless possibilities that come by opening up the audience/performer relationship. Her love of storytelling and a passion to share the Gospel through dance were fanned into flame during her 14 years of serving on the faculty for the Dance Revolution dance convention. With a deep desire to use dance as a tool to serve the “unseen” of society, in 2014 Jeanna founded Open Sky Arts Collective. Since its beginning, Open Sky has become a nationwide missional arts organization that fosters close-knit artist communities who use dance to create inroads for people from all walks of life to experience the unstoppable love of God. Jeanna lives in the Dallas area, directing Open Sky Dallas, dance-making, speaking, teaching, and dreaming of new ways to make dinner.

In Contemporary Technique class, you’ll deepen mobility, and engage technical lines, access length, and momentum. We’ll explore concepts in extension and suspension, catch and release, depth and width. Jeanna’s class has been most influenced by Limón and Counter Technique, with movement that requires breath, billow, and full surrender. Come find your flow and lean into risk. Geared toward advanced dancers.

Next, the amazing Jasmine Seungyeon Yoo!

Jasmine Seungyeon Yoo is originally from Seoul, South Korea. She began dancing with Soo Dance Company at the age of 8 and later moved to the United States to pursue a career in dance. Dance Worship Movement is designed to help you worship through movement and connect with God through dance. I hope this class serves as a stepping stone for using your gift of dance in your daily life to connect with Jesus! In this class, we will begin with a warm-up, learn a variety of dance phrases, create choreography inspired by scripture, and practice improvisation.
