Rebuild Hope After a Devastating Flood in KIU Khari, Gilgit
A family lost their home, land, and livelihood in minutes. Let’s help them rebuild from nothing.
On July 22nd, a terrifying and unexpected disaster struck the quiet village of KIU Khari in Gilgit-Baltistan. A powerful glacial lake outburst flood suddenly surged down the valley, forcing the Hunza-Nagar River to change its course near KIU Khari. Within minutes, it tore through the land, destroying everything in its path.
Among the 14 homes wiped away was my sister in law's home—the very first one to be hit. In just five minutes, her house was completely destroyed. Everything was lost—personal belongings, furniture, clothing, documents, food supplies, and most tragically, their animals. What took years to build and nurture was erased in moments.
By the grace and mercy of God, all family members survived—but they escaped with only the clothes on their backs. Today, they are living in a temporary shelter with no certainty about tomorrow. Their lives were turned upside down in a flash, and they are now starting from zero.
Loss of Livelihood
This was not just the loss of a home. It was the loss of a livelihood, a way of life, and a sense of security.
Before the flood, my sister’s family depended on farming and livestock. They cultivated around 50 kanals of agricultural land, growing potatoes, wheat, vegetables, and a variety of fruits that provided food for their children and income for daily needs. That land is now buried under rocks, mud, and debris. It is no longer usable without significant resources. Along the loss of livelihood, my little 5 year old niece Amina not only lost her toys, her joy, but also her school bag full of books, what washed away was her chance to a decent education. Let's give our little Amina hope again.
They also raised animals—cows, goats, and chickens—which were a vital part of their survival. Sadly, only one cow and one goat survived. The rest were lost to the flood, along with their shelters and feeding supplies. For a rural family in Gilgit, this is not just a financial loss—it’s a loss of food, income, and dignity.
