From the HFLA Administrator: I have a nice story to share with you.I just received a call from a a previous borrower who now lives in San Antonio but took a loan out with us in the late 1990s early 2000. She told me that she had to walk away from her loan and it has been on her mind ever since. Now that she is retired and has extra savings, she would like to pay the balance off which she thinks was around $1,000.00 I told her that we do not have full records of loans taken out so long ago, and if I could not find it I suggested she makes a donation to HFLA. Anyway, I found her on our Old Loan list and her balance owing was $1,050.00. She gave me her bank account details and is now in the clear and off our list. She could not thank us enough. I told her that we are so grateful to her for reaching out after all these years.

HFLA of Houston has continued to grow and to strive for more ways to provide a hand up, instead of a handout to members of our community.Through this year as with the past 80+ years, HFLA has been providing interest-free loans to Jewish individuals and families of the greater Houston area whose needs are urgent and who do not qualify for loans through normal financial channels. Interest-free loans, instead of charity, fill an important gap in our social system by promoting self-sufficiency with dignity. Following on the High Holidays, the holiday of Sukkoth represents a shift from somber reflection to joyous celebration and from introspection to an outward display of thanks for the earth’s bounty. We celebrate and appreciate our generous donors who provide the funds to allow us to make these loans and we appreciate those who are willing to come forward to take out these loans. We also celebrate the amazing work efforts of the HFLA board, consisting of twenty-one unpaid volunteers and the sage advice of the liaison members from the Houston Jewish Federation and Jewish Family Service who attend our board meetings. We cannot ignore the wonderful work of our Administrator, who works with borrowers and the committees, which help HFLA function so well.Just a reminder that we have funds available to lend out to members of our Houston Jewish community. It’s a mitzvah to refer someone you know, who may need some assistance. We’re here for this purpose.

Another loan provided for living expenses, allowing a Houston community member to finish studying and to earn a better wage. HFLA of Houston is breaking records.

HFLA achieved a record number of loans since July 2023. The Loan Committee is working extremely well with the Association coordinator.

Since 1932 the Hebrew Free Loan Association of Houston (HFLA) has been providing Jews in Greater Houston with confidential interest free loans. HFLA operates under the guiding notion that the highest form of Tzedakah is to provide fellow Jews with dignity of a hand-up rather than a hand-out. Likewise, the majority of our donors make small donations entrusting us to help them perform the Mitzvah of Tzedakah in this special way they would not otherwise be able to accomplish. To serve these ends we provide loans in a variety of circumstances: • Emergencies • Housing and eviction avoidance • Food • Senior care • Medical • Existing and start-up businesses • Transportation and travelers aid • Undergraduate and graduate tuition • Jewish camp and K-12 fees • Fertility/Adoption We are a 501© (3) non-profit corporation. http://www.hfla.net/site/home.html
