🌟 Volunteer of the Month: Rachel Hutyra 🌟

This month, we're celebrating Rachel Hutyra for the countless hours she spends behind the scenes handwriting thank-you cards and supporting administrative projects that help advance our mission.

When asked why she volunteers with Sky High for Kids, Rachel shared:
"I volunteer with Sky High because I am inspired by their dedication to help children and families facing pediatric cancer. Their mission demonstrates the power of community and how coming together can change the lives of so many. For me, the most invaluable part of SHFK is the tangible love, faith, determination and commitment in all they do."

Rachel also shared that one of her favorite Sky High initiatives is Sunday Supper and the story behind how it began!

💥Fun fact: Rachel has a gift for remembering what matters to people. Whether it's a favorite hobby, food, or dream, she loves helping others feel seen and remembered.

Thank you, Rachel, for sharing your time with Sky High for Kids. We are grateful for all you do. 🤗💙

Cancer Warrior Wednesday: Meet Abril 💙

At just 7 years old, Abril was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) with approximately 96% leukemic blasts in her bone marrow. Since then, she has endured countless hospital visits, painful treatments, losing her hair, and months away from normal childhood moments yet through it all, Abril continued to fight with positivity.

"It’s okay, Mom. I know God has a plan and He is taking care of me.” While there were moments of sadness, and tears of fear and frustration, she continued to face everything with courage and trust in God.

By the grace of God, on March 27, her biopsy showed zero cancer cells. While she still has treatment ahead, Abril is determined to finish strong - with a smile on her face and faith in her heart.

Cancer Warrior Wednesday - Congratulations Natalie! 🎓💓

An extra special spotlight this Warrior Wednesday! Sky High for Kids first met Natalie just weeks after her diagnosis with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in February 2023. Since then, we have had the honor of walking alongside her through treatment, celebrations, milestones, and unforgettable memories.

From Sky High events, to an Adventure trip to Japan, to forming lifelong friendships with fellow Cancer Warriors, to even getting Sky High tattoos together (iykyk😉) - Natalie has become such a special part of the Sky High family.

Through it all, Natalie continued pursuing her dreams and never stopped moving forward.
Today, we are so proud to celebrate and spotlight her graduation from The University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology as she continues pursuing her Master’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences at UT Health.

Natalie, your strength, your positivity, and your spirit are nothing but an inspiration. We are beyond proud of you and cannot wait to see all you accomplish next.

Warrior Wednesday: Meet Jasper 💙

We know not everyone was able to be at our Boot & Shoot fundraising event last week but, we wanted to make sure you still got to hear Jasper’s story. We had the privilege of honoring Jasper, one of our Sky High Angels, whose life continues to leave a lasting impact on so many.

Jasper was a happy, curly blonde-headed boy who loved Jesus, his family, his dogs, being outside, playing sports, and going fast. At 14, everything changed when he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma after collapsing during baseball practice. Over the next 3.5 years, he endured 17 surgeries, hospital stays, ICU time, collapsed lungs, neurotoxicity, and countless hard days in treatment.

But Jasper was never just his diagnosis.

He found joy in Lego, made bracelets and keychains, and even started his own YouTube Lego channel. He joked about “collecting nurse friends like Pokémon cards,” loved fast cars and engines, and somehow kept his humor through it all.

Even in the hardest moments, he was still checking in on other people and holding tightly to his faith in Jesus.

Jasper went home to Jesus on February 21, 2024, when he gained his angel wings. We are honored to carry his story forward and continue the fight.

Before sharing more moments from last week, we wanted to pause our celebrations and acknowledge the unimaginable tragedy that has deeply affected the Houston community.

Today, we’re honoring the life and legacy of Thy - someone who showed up in such a genuine, steady way for others. In a time that is meant to celebrate mothers and family, this loss feels especially heartbreaking.

Thy cared deeply about her community and believed wholeheartedly in using her influence to make the world a better place, especially for children and families in need. That is one of the many reasons she chose to support Sky High for Kids. She believed strongly in the power of family, a core value woven into everything we do.

Thy attended our Ladies Who Brunch event, selected us as the Charity of Choice for both Traveler’s Cart and Traveler’s Table, and created a special kids meal initiative so that kids could give back to kids. She also supported Sunday Supper, helping provide meals and comfort to families spending their evenings inside the hospital instead of at home.

That was simply who Thy was: thoughtful, compassionate, and always looking for ways to help others. Her impact reached far beyond her restaurants and into the hearts of so many across Houston.

Tragedies like this are felt by an entire community, and we overcome them by standing together and carrying forward the same generosity and compassion Thy showed so freely.

We are holding her loved ones and everyone grieving her loss in our hearts. 🤍
