How this would eventually affect our neighborhood is by better connecting Mason Park with Hidalgo Park via improvements in all transportation methods. Then Mason Park is currently being connected to the Ingrando Park/Berkeley St. area through similar improvements. (see post a few months ago.)

Houston-Galveston Area Council, in collaboration with the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, is leading Connecting Buffalo Bayou East, a concept design study to build upon Buffalo Bayou East’s redevelopment projects currently being designed and constructed. The study will focus

What is the East End Bike Plan and how will it change the Pecan Park area?
The Plan was announced in Oct. 2020;
"The East End Bike Plan is the first step in a joint effort to build a connected network of high-comfort bikeways across the East End with goals to expand mobility choice for residents, make biking safer for people of all ages and abilities, and provide healthy transportation options and access to opportunities for residents. "
So...5 years later Phase 1 is ready to get underway. Not sure of dates but I've looked at the plan https://hcp2.com/Portals/53/Documents/East-End-Bike-Plan.pdf?ver=r5pu7xOxwiNABOoQ7xsk0Q%3d%3d
and it appears there are 3 walk/bike paths, involving modifications to streets and crossings, in our neighborhood;

1) Broad St/Myrtle St./Hemlock St./Junius St. (page 120)

Broad St would be widened and a walk/bike path with a barrier protecting it from car traffic, along with artwork and improved crossings under I-45. The intersection at Hemlock and Evergreen would be a "protected" intersection and a few streets along Myrtle would become 4-way stops. Estimated cost; $600k

2) Mason Park entrance at Evergreen to Ingrando Park on Keller. (page 127)

This one is a bit trickier because the intersection at Lawndale and Griggs, "presents many challenges, including a freight rail crossing." Uh...yeah. Evergreen also has a Metro line running along it with lots of stops and shelters, Southmayd elementary school and preschool daycare nearby traffic all will be integrated into the plan. Estimated cost; $1.35 M

3) Ingrando Park to Berkley. (page 134)

This is a short (1/4 mile) from designated trails in Ingrando Park to the adding a 10 ft protected walk/bike path crossing the Berkley St Bridge over the drainage channel (Gulf Creek?) to Sanchez Elementary. Estimated cost; $220k.
Phase 2 will include continuing the existing bike path along Lawndale all the way to Broadway.

So walking, riding bikes, taking Metro.....more and more people are doing these things but when you do them you see that it requires some adventure and caution as our area is car/train oriented. This plan intends to improve that situation.

Residents of the area...The East End District has money to spend to make the area that they serve safer for people who walk, ride bikes or drive and make living with freight trains as safe and efficient as possible.

Think about intersections near you...how about the super crazy one up where Lawndale, Griggs and Evergreen cross with the train slicing through the mess....yeah.

Hello,

My name is Desi Rios and I am a resident of a Pecan Park and also work with the East End Communities Collaborative which includes 12 East End non-profit partners including SER Jobs, Community Family Center, Barrio Dogs, Christus Health, El Centro de Corazon, Magnolia Park Arts & Culture, Sisters of Charity, Houston Area Women's Center, Finca Tres Robles, Communities in Schools/Milby High School, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, and Houston Department of Neighborhoods.

We are launching a Photovoice Project for which we are asking community members to take pictures and tell us about their experiences and concerns in the East End. We have completed a community assessment and so far the five top priorities are Housing, Education, Look/Feel/Safety, Social Networks & Trust, and Arts & Cultural Expression. Our next phase of community engagement is to have residents take pictures and tell us about them, but also have community conversations about what we can do to preserve what we love or to make changes to things that concern us.

Would it be possible to have 5 minutes at the next Pecan Park Civic Association meeting to introduce myself and East End Communities, and invite attendees to submit pictures to the project. Our goal is to have several community meetings leading up to a photo exhibit during Hispanic Heritage month where we will invite all who submitted pictures and their friends/families, community members, our partner organizations, and elected officials.

Thank you for reading this long email! I look forward to hearing from you.

Desi

Hey!

My name is Claire and I work at the Melcher Neighborhood Library in Pecan Park. I just wanted to reach out and let you guys know that we are officially back open to the most hours per week than we have been in the past five years--since Harvey. Although we are a tiny space, we are really excited to be back opened and have so many great books, hot spots, job-search resources, and fun for the entire family at our library.

Our current hours are:
Monday: 10-6
Tuesday: 12-8
Wednesday: 10-6
Thursday: 10-6
Friday-Sunday: Closed

We, along with some other smaller locations, are closed Friday through Sunday, but other great neighborhood libraries (Stanaker, Flores, Smith) are all opened on Fridays and Saturdays if our customers need access to our resources. While we are not currently offering in-person programming, we have amazing online programs especially for babies-toddlers and adults who are interested in learning English. As mentioned, we also have a great hot spot program happening now where any adult with a library card can check out a hot spot for free, providing internet access to an entire household for no charge.

Please let me know if there are any events you all are planning or if you want any flyers or information regarding the neighborhood up in our building! I know COVID knocked us all out for a little while, but as we start to regain our momentum, I wanted to reach out and see if we can help this lovely neighborhood together.

Thank you so much,

Claire Hubble

Beautiful day today...people riding bikes, children playing in the street, people working on their yards, walking their dogs. Pecan Park; where a person can live their life full measure.
