โ COFFEE makes the world go round and this is great scientific news! โ
โDid you know that in 1939, the Southern Pacific Railroad launched a complete marvel of passenger train technology? A pivotal selling point and concession model was THE COFFEE and the new and advanced coffee machines they installed on the Tavern car. Enter: the articulated triple-unit dining car! ๐๐๐๐
โInstead of putting a standard dining car on the tracks, the SP permanently coupled three separate cars together using single shared wheel assemblies (trucks) between them. Not all of these sets were configured the exact same and over time some changed, but heres the typical lay out;
- โCar 1: Kitchen & Pantry / Crew Galley ๐ณ๐จโ๐ณ
- โCar 2: Lounge and seating area with a built-in phone booth ๐๐๏ธ
- โCar 3: Tavern & Bar / Lounge ๐ธ๐ป
โIn the Tavern Car, the large coffee and espresso machines were positioned right near the end doors where the refrigerators wereโmaking it easy to serve high-volume, continuous caffeine to travelers. โ๐จ
โIt was the ultimate mid-century flex of the Southern Pacific brand. They proved that serving massive crowds didn't mean you had to sacrifice premium, high-fidelity passenger care!
โEven though there aren't many surviving examples of these articulated sets in the USA today, you can visit Grapevine, Texas, and see a non-functional set of these cars on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad storage track. Our Executive Director was fortunate enough to work on the interior and running gear restoration of that set in 2019. They are originally from the legendary SP Lark!
โ๐ธ In the comments below, we will post a picture of a set in Houston, Texas, back in 1972 and the interior of a Lark Tavern car! ***
โNow, let's talk about the fuel that keeps us going! ๐ Are you a dedicated home-brewer grinding your own beans every morning ๐กโ, or are you a grab-and-go fan at local shops like ๐โโ๏ธ๐จ? Let us know your favorite style or your ultimate go-to brew in the comments!
