Freewheels Houston

Freewheels Houston Freewheels Houston volunteers repair donated bikes for refugees, veterans, and young people who need reliable transportation.

A bike solves something immediate and important — it gives people the ability to move through their lives on their own terms. Freewheels is open Friday and Saturday mornings for volunteer bike repair and to receive donations of used bikes. Our greatest need is for hybrid and mountain bikes with 26-inch or 700c wheels.

The Jafaris arrived in Houston from Afghanistan with the skills and the drive to build a new life. Two bikes means the kids can ride to school safely — and mom can get to the store while dad is at work. 🚲

Jasmine is a frequent volunteer at Freewheels Houston and she also pitches in at the library, where she met Tuscany and helped him navigate computer resources and look for work and housing. When she learned he needed a bike, she arranged one through Freewheels and delivered it with her father.
Two volunteer roles. One neighbor who needed both. 🚲

Mark spent six years in the U.S. Navy working on nuclear carriers and submarines. These days, he's doing maintenance work for small businesses around Houston — and his Freewheels bike is how he gets there.
He was one of 10 veterans who built their Freewheels bikes at the Tunnel to Towers Veterans Village in Tomball. He said he will be hooking up his bike trailer and heading off to his next job.

One bike, six people, a new life in motion.

When Abdul Karim Qayumi and his family of six arrived in Houston, their world extended only as far as they could walk from their apartment. Freewheels provided one bike.

“This bicycle has improved the mobility of our whole family,” Mr. Qayumi said. “We share this bicycle to get around, to visit neighbors, and to get out into the community.”

Today, all three employable adults in the Qayumi household are working full-time. Read the full story: freewheelshouston.org/qayumi

“This bike comes at a very opportune time.” 🚲
Meet Christopher, a recent graduate. As he enters the “work phase” of his transition, a bike is the bridge to his future.
Congratulations, Christopher!

Heather is a cycling enthusiast who also loves arts and crafts. When she discovered Freewheels on Google, she donated two surplus bikes — including this one, prepped for Houston’s Art Car Parade.

She still rides. She just didn’t need two extra bikes sitting around.

If you have a bike you’re not riding, we’ll make sure it goes to someone who needs it. We accept donations Friday and Saturday mornings, 9 a.m. to noon, at 6020 Jessamine #103 in Gulfton.

Do you fix your own bikes?

Shawn, a retired engineer, walked into our Gulfton shop four years ago not knowing much about bike repair. He was welcomed by students, professionals and people like him all working toward the same goal — putting safe, reliable bikes in the hands of people who need them most.

His first day, he helped a refugee select a bike, fit him with a helmet and send him on his way.

“I was hooked,” he says.

If you’ve worked on bikes before or have a mechanical mindset that you want to put to work, we will put you to work. Find us on Volunteer Houston or visit freewheelshouston.org/volunteer.

Volunteer Kim Williams said the best part of her day was helping four veterans get bikes, helmets and locks.

"They were appreciative, yet fragile. I felt like we showed them love and care today. It did my heart good."
