Galveston - Houston Families Exploring Down Syndrome

Galveston - Houston Families Exploring Down Syndrome Ghfeds offers educational and social programs for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

Galveston-Houston Families Exploring Down Syndrome (GHFEDS) Board will strive to make all members feel welcome and included, that they have input and support, and that the Board is acting in the best interests of all of its members. GHFEDS will provide opportunities for member involvement, communicate decisions and plans to the members, and ask for input and feedback from members frequently. GHFED

S will focus on providing family support and education, building a strong community of families with DS, and educating the community in hopes of providing a positive outlook for our children and adults with DS. As part of this, we will work towards supporting families of individuals from birth to oldage and getting new parents the right resources early so that all babies get a good start.

Drowning and Water Safety: The Danger We Do Not Talk About Enough

πŸ’š Children with autism are 160 times more likely to drown than their non-disabled peers. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in our community and it happens silently and fast. πŸ¦•βœ¨

Why our children are at higher risk:

πŸ’™ Many children are strongly drawn to water because it feels calming and sensory regulating

πŸ’™ Elopement and water are one of the deadliest combinations families face

πŸ’™ Motor planning and communication challenges can make it difficult to recover or call for help

πŸ’™ Traditional swim lessons often do not work without adaptive instruction

What you can do right now:

🌊 Enroll in adaptive swim lessons
πŸšͺ Add door and window alarms
🏊 Install a self latching pool fence
πŸ†” Register with your vulnerable persons registry
πŸ‘™ Choose bright neon swimwear
πŸ’š Learn hands on CPR through Ready to Respond

Fundamentally Awesome is building adaptive swimming and safety education programs because our children deserve to be safe every second. πŸ’šπŸ¦•βœ¨

Sensory processing challenges are relatively common among adolescents and adults with Down syndrome. They can be related to one or more of our 8 senses - touch, sight, sound, taste, smell, vestibular, proprioceptive, and/or interoceptive.

Some examples include:
➑ Dislike of certain fabrics or clothing items
➑ Sensitivity to loud sounds, visual stimuli, or strong scents
➑ Trouble with recognizing feelings of thirst or satiation (feeling full)
➑ Difficulty with regulating force (e.g., applying too much or not enough pressure when completing a task)

When the sensory system is not regulated, a person can have difficulty managing their behavior and actions, completing tasks, and interacting with others. Treatment is highly individualized and can range from using weighted objects to doing push-ups to wearing headphones in noisy environments. The goal is to help a person function more smoothly.

Katie Frank, PhD, OTR/L, occupational therapist at the Adult Down Syndrome Center, provides more information about sensory processing challenges in people with Down syndrome in the article linked below.
