This summer, the Art House taught us about a need we didn’t know we would have.
When we repaired the house, we envisioned it primarily as a space for our seniors, kids, art programs, and community gatherings. Because of that, the bathroom was completed with a toilet and sink, but no shower.
Then this summer, we found ourselves helping two teens in crisis who needed emergency shelter while more permanent housing is being arranged.
As we reached out to community partners, we realized something so simple was actually very difficult to find: a safe place for them to shower. I began driving them to my home so they could shower and take care of their basic needs.
That experience made us realize the Art House needs to be better prepared.
We may not know when another young person, senior, family, or community member will need help in an emergency. Having a shower onsite gives us one more way to respond with dignity and care.
So we are raising $3,000 to add a simple 5-foot standing shower to the Art House bathroom. The funds will help cover the shower, plumbing, tile, flooring, materials, and labor.
We’re not trying to build anything fancy. We simply want the Art House to have what it needs when someone in our community needs us.
