Saengerbund Awards:  A German Vocal Competition A contest for the support, development and preservation of German singing All 8 finalists will receive a cash award, ranging from $400 to $2000.

Founded by the Houston Saengerbund, the Saengerbund Awards is a vocal competion, limited to young adults aged 21-30, for the support, development and preservation of German Singing. Repertoire from opera, oratorio, German operetta, Lieder or folk song is presented each January at the Liederabend Finals Concert.

The 9th Annual Saengerbund Awards: A German Vocal Competition, February 17, 2024:

Our 5th finalist on the program will be French-American soprano Véronique Filloux.

Véronique has brought her expressive singing and dazzling coloratura to companies including Wolf Trap Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Arizona Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Berkshire Opera Festival, Central City Opera, and The Metropolitan Opera. She will perform “Zerbinetta’s Aria” from Ariadne auf Naxos, by Richard Strauss; and “Das Verlassene Mägdlein” by Hugo Wolf, with text by Eduard Mörike.

The 9th Annual Saengerbund Awards: A German Vocal Competition, February 17, 2024:

Our 4th finalist on the program will be tenor Daniel O’Hearn from Chicago, Illinois.

Recently, Mr. O'Hearn has performed with The Metropolitan Opera as First Armored Guard in The Magic Flute, with the Pittsburgh Opera as Steuermann in Der Fliegende Holländer, and with Vashon Opera as Roméo in Roméo et Juliette. This season, he will also cover Canio in The Glimmerglass Festival’s Pagliacci, and Benvolio in The Met’s Roméo et Juliette. Daniel will now perform “Mit Gewitter und Sturm aus Fernem Meer“ from Der Fliegende Holländer, by Richard Wagner; and “Mein Schöner Stern“ from Minnespiel, Op. 101, No. 4, by Robert Schumann.

The 9th Annual Saengerbund Awards: A German Vocal Competition, February 17, 2024:

Our 3rd finalist on the program will be mezzo-soprano Maggie Renee from Los Angeles, California.

Ms. Renee is a Metropolitan Opera Competition Grand Finalist Award winner, Opera Index Award winner, Igor Gorin Memorial Award recipient and an honors BM and MM graduate of The Juilliard School, where she is currently pursuing her Artist Diploma in Opera Studies. Maggie will perform the “Witch’s Aria” from Hänsel und Gretel, by Engelbert Humperdinck; and “Die Liebe hat Gelogen” by Franz Schubert.

Our 2nd finalist on the program will be Australian bariton James Young.

Mr. Young recently completed a master’s degree from Nuremberg under Professor Susanne Kelling. He is a Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award winner, and has been a three-time Young Artist in Bayreuth. He joins the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden this year as house soloist for their 24/25 season. James will now perform “Fünftausend Thaler“ from Der Wildschütz ,by Albert Lortzing; and “Der Doppelgänger“ from Schwanengesang, by Franz Schubert.

Our 1st finalist on the program will be soprano Caitlin Aloia.

Caitlin shares a deep passion and respect for art song, chamber music, and opera. She recently spent two seasons as an Apprentice Artist at the Santa Fe Opera, and before that, enjoyed a summer at the Marlboro Music Festival. She is currently in pursuit of her Artist Diploma at Rice University, where she also received her master’s degree in 2022. She will perform “Suleika” by Franz Schubert and “Marietta’s Lied” from Die Tote Stadt, by Erik Korngold.

The Houston Saengerbund is proud to present its 9th Annual Saengerbund Awards - a German Vocal Competition. Five outstanding finalists, selected from nearly 200 worldwide entries, will perform live on stage for a top prize of $5000.
