Sometimes, a trip that was supposed to last a few days can change the course of an entire life.
Joseph Faden traveled from Reno, Nevada, to Houston with his wife and their two children so she could visit her sister while facing stage 4 cancer. Sadly, just days after arriving, Joseph’s wife was hospitalized and passed away.
In a matter of days, Joseph found himself grieving the loss of his wife while trying to care for his children in an unfamiliar city.
Unexpected medical, funeral, and emergency expenses quickly depleted the family’s savings. After staying temporarily with his sister-in-law, Joseph and his children eventually moved into an emergency hotel that he did not feel was safe or suitable for his family.
He needed somewhere his children could feel secure. He needed time to grieve. And he needed a chance to figure out what came next.
That search led him to West Houston Assistance Ministries.
WHAM’s Case Management team worked with Joseph to address his family’s immediate needs, beginning with emergency food assistance. Within days, the family was moved from the hotel into safer temporary housing, giving Joseph several months of stability to begin rebuilding.
That breathing room mattered. His children had a safe place to sleep and could focus on returning to school. Joseph was able to transfer to a Houston location through his employer and continue working while searching for permanent housing.
And somewhere along the way, Houston stopped feeling like the city where his family became stranded.
It started feeling like home.
Joseph says he enjoys his new workplace, appreciates Houston, and believes the environment here can offer his children a healthier fresh start. His original visit was supposed to last less than a week. Now, he says he plans to stay.
Joseph remains deeply grateful for the support his family received during one of the hardest periods of their lives.
Stories like Joseph’s show why emergency assistance matters. Sometimes food, safe housing, and compassionate case management do more than address an immediate crisis. They give a family the time and stability needed to begin again.
