A Historic Announcement from Houston Center for Photography:
After 45 years of serving artists, students, and audiences across the region, Houston Center for Photography is thrilled to announce that we have entered into an agreement to purchase 1150 Bissonnet Street, establishing HCP's first permanent home in our organization's history.
Situated in Houston's Museum District, the future campus encompasses two historically significant buildings designed by William Ward Watkin. Our vision is to preserve their remarkable architectural character while thoughtfully transforming the site into a vibrant center for contemporary photography.
For more than four decades, HCP has been one of only a few independent photography centers in the United States and the only organization of its kind in Texas. Through free exhibitions, more than 200 classes and workshops each year, artist fellowships and residencies, publications, and free educational programs that serve over 4,500 K–12 students annually, HCP has helped build and sustain Houston's photographic community.
This project is made possible by HCP's $10 million capital campaign, which will support the acquisition, preservation, and renovation of the property while ensuring the organization's long-term sustainability. We are grateful to have already secured more than $1.5 million toward this transformational effort.
As plans move forward, we look forward to sharing renderings, community engagement opportunities, and updates on the future campus. We invite artists, neighbors, supporters, foundations, and civic leaders to join us in shaping a permanent home for photography in Texas.
