Our 5th Annual Tails & Trails Houston is coming up, and we need a few good people to help make the morning a success! Join us Saturday, October 10th from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Mason Park for a fun morning of walking, wagging tails and supporting Barrio Dogs.

Last Friday, we had the privilege of meeting with about 50 members of the Milby High School Peace Club to talk about Barrio Dogs and the work we do in the community. The students were engaged, curious, genuinely interested in learning more and even collected pet care items to donate to our work!

It’s encouraging to see young people caring about an issue that affects their community and finding ways to make a difference. Great job, Milby Peace Club, thank you for supporting Barrio Dogs and keep up the good work! 🐾❤️

Sunny October mornings in Houston are made for being outdoors! ☀️

Now that the weather is finally changing, it’s the perfect time to grab your dog, gather your friends and enjoy a healthy walk together at Tails & Trails Houston. 🌳🐕‍🦺

Enjoy the fresh air, get some steps in, soak up the sunshine, and, of course, have a little fun with our Halloween and Día de los Mu***os theme! Costumes are welcome for both two-legged and four-legged walkers. 🎃💀🐶

We don’t want the week to end without saying a huge thank you to the TPC Group for inviting us to their 21st Annual Charity Golf Tournament in Kingwood earlier this week and for choosing Barrio Dogs as one of the beneficiaries of the funds raised! (NOTE: Barrio Dogs isn't receiving the entire amount raised; it is divided between 16 beneficiaries.)

With so many worthy charities doing important work in our community, their support of Barrio Dogs means a great deal to us. We’re grateful for the opportunity to share our mission and for TPC Group’s investment in the work we do.

Congratulations to the TPC Group on another successful fundraiser, and thank you for making a difference for Barrio Dogs and the community we serve! 🐾⛳️

Our volunteers keep Barrio Dogs going, so in honor of all the amazing people who give their time to help us, we hosted a volunteer appreciation happy hour last night. 🐾❤️

It was wonderful to see everyone, enjoy some great food and beverages, and spend time together. We’re grateful for each and every one of our volunteers,

A big thank you to The Mill on Milby for hosting us and helping make the evening so special. 🍻

Yesterday, our team was able to spend time with the seniors at the Wesley Community Center. Accompanying us was beautiful Athena the pittie. Everyone seemed to enjoy the visit, especially meeting Athena. Also, thanks to the Houston Humane Society, we were able to distribute pet food to participants.

Thank you Wesley Community Center for inviting us! We had a wonderful time visiting with the seniors and look forward to doing it again.

We were happy to do a Youth and Paws presentation for around 50 pre-K students at Davila Elementary yesterday. Our adorable rescued dog, Krypto, made an appearance, much to the delight of the students who listened, paid attention and were a great audience. Thank you Union Pacific for supplying the educational materials we sent home with the students and thank you Davila for the invitation!

Today, Harris County presented an official resolution recognizing Puppy Mill Awareness Day! 🐾

For nearly 17 years, Barrio Dogs has tackled Houston’s animal overpopulation crisis at its root through spay neuter access, humane education and neighborhood advocacy.

Commercial puppy mills prioritize profit over welfare, overwhelming local shelters like BARC and Harris County Pets while draining city and county animal welfare resources. By shining a light on this issue, we can educate the public and end the demand for puppies from breeding facilities.

Huge thanks to Harris County, Harris County Pets, Lone Star Humane Association, and all our local animal welfare partners for standing up for Houston's most vulnerable animals! ❤️🏡

HCSO wants to remind us that roadside sales of animals are illegal in Harris County.

The same is true for Houston. If you see someone selling puppies (or kittens) in Houston on the side of the road, in a parking lot or at a flea market or swap meet, do the following:

1. Gather details safely. Take date-stamped photos if possible, noting vehicle license plates, the condition of the animals, and any pricing signs. Do not confront the sellers directly.

2. Report it by calling BARC at 311. You can also notify the management of the property or business parking lot where the vendor is set up, as they can ask them to leave.
