Did you know that historically, Houston has funded animal welfare activities at a lower per capita rate than other Texas cities? We think this is one reason we have an animal overpopulation problem in Houston. With increased funding, BARC could hire more animal control officers to enforce city ordinances, offer more free spay neuter services, and do more community outreach and education.

The 2027 budget process is currently underway; BARC's budget is under the Administrative and Regulatory Affairs (ARA) division. Learn more about the budget process and contact your council member and the mayor and ask them why Houston's funding for animals is lower than other cities. Attend public budget hearings and ask the same question.

Happy News: Camelo Has Found His Forever Home!

We are thrilled to announce that Camelo has officially been adopted! He is now a happy member of the Salameh family and we wish them all the very best as they begin this new chapter together.

A special thank you goes to Yolee and David Flores for fostering Camelo. Their dedication as fosters played a vital role in preparing him for this transition and ensuring he was ready for his forever family.

It takes a community to change a life, and we are grateful to everyone who played a part in Camelo's journey.

Yesterday, our Youth and Paws team had the pleasure of visiting Berry Elementary where we made a presentation to about 45 first grade students. It was the first YAP outing for pup Riley, who was a perfect gentleman and a big hit with the students. We'll be back at Berry on Friday to talk to more students; if you would like for our YAP team to visit your school or community center, contact [email protected].

Today, our team spotlight is on Brittaney Becker. Brittaney originally joined our team as the Youth & Paws Coordinator but is now Director of Programs. Brittaney brings intelligence and dedication to our mission, making her a big asset to the Barrio Dogs' family. Brittaney shares the story of her path from a parent in the audience to a leader within our organization:

"When I first heard about Barrio Dogs, it was at my son's preschool in 2019. I happen to be a part of the PTO who asked them to come for a presentation. They talked to the children and helped them understand dog safety and how to be kind to animals.

Then in 2024 I received a call from Gloria to see if I would be interested in being the Youth & Paws Coordinator, I accepted and ended up being the one now who would go into the schools and give presentations like the one I saw with my son. It truly was a full circle moment.

As the months went by I learned much more about what Barrio Dogs was about and how they not only educated the community but empowered and transformed them. I only wished there was an organization like this when I was a kid. I remember having to give up my dogs because we could no longer afford to feed them or take them to the vet, it was such a hard thing to go through as a child. Now I'm able to help families keep their furry loved ones by providing families with care and resources their pets may need."

Everyone needs a friend like Kirby. This sweet and silly boy is playful (he loves zoomies), good-natured and a great listener. He is patiently waiting for his forever person to say, “let’s go!”

Kirby’s journey is a powerful reminder of the resilience of Houston's street dogs. He was rescued from traffic near Kirby & 610 and after being fully vetted, neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, remains a really good boy with a gentle soul who needs a forever home.

While direct rescue is not Barrio Dogs' primary mission, we believe everyone has a role to play in addressing the crisis of homeless dogs on our streets. When a neighbor steps up to save a life, we feel it is vital to do our part and "chip in" to ensure the animal gets the care they need.

If you're interested in adopting or fostering Kirby, contact us at [email protected]. If you'd like to contribute to his care, please do so at https://barriodogs.org/donate/.

Are you looking for a way to give back to the community? Are you available during the day? Do you have experience working in a classroom or with children? Then our Youth and Paws (YAP) Lead position may be right for you!

We're looking for someone to help with our YAP visits to area schools. Visits occur during school hours and can include from 20 to 200 students, mostly in elementary or middle school.

The position starts out as a volunteer one with the potential for a stipend down the road. It would be a perfect for a retired educator but we encourage anyone who is interested to respond. FYI; all applicants must be able to pass a background check.

Camelo is the definition of a "new best friend." He’s a 35 lb pit mix who just needs an experienced hand and a little time to adjust to his new surroundings.

Both of these handsome boys are neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Help us find them their perfect match! Contact [email protected] for details.

Meet Joann Lopez, our organizational queen!

We are continuing our Team Spotlight series by highlighting Joann Lopez, who has been with us since 2017. Joann first learned about Barrio Dogs through our Youth & Paws program at Davila Elementary; her son brought materials home from the program, and she was hooked.

When Hurricane Harvey struck, our organization was asked to set up a shelter at NRG for displaced families and their pets. We managed a shelter area around the clock, and Joann was a total superstar. She ensured our kennels were spotless—she set the gold standard for sterilization and she has an incredible talent for keeping pet essentials organized. Organization is truly her strong suit, and we have been lucky to have her with us ever since. Joann has adopted several rescues with our help and has a special soft spot for kitties, sharing her home with several.

Here is what Joann has to say about her time with Barrio Dogs:
"It really breaks my heart to see so many animals suffer in our community. There was a time I felt so sad and helpless, but working with Barrio Dogs has allowed me to help in so many situations involving cats, dogs, and local pet owners. I truly believe that everyone can do something to make our community better for pets."

Footnote: JoAnn had to say goodbye to one of her pups this weekend, a senior dog she took in a few years ago. We know her heart is heavy so we're sending her much love. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10214772569344191

It was a busy and productive morning for our Youth and Paws (YAP) team! We visited Morales Elementary to share our presentation with approximately 300 students from pre-K through 4th grade. The kids were a fantastic audience: attentive, curious, and full of energy.

The real star of the show, however, was Athena. This beautiful pittie girl was a big hit and made many new friends.

Want a visit? If you’d like the YAP team to visit your school, please reach out to [email protected].
