Every pet owner wants the best for their furry family members, but the realities of overbreeding and chronic health issues can catch anyone by surprise.

This little cutie came to us because his devoted owner simply didn’t realize the heavy toll and ongoing care that often come with buying a dog from a breeder. It’s completely understandable not to know what you’re walking into, and there is zero judgment here, but we want to use this opportunity to spread the word. Buying a dog from a backyard breeder, a neighbor, at a flea market or from a roadside seller can lead to all kinds of (expensive) health problems as well as contribute to overpopulation.

This sweet boy and his mom are not to blame and we are glad we could step in to help them navigate this together. We will always advocate for because our shelters, rescue groups, and streets are full of wonderful animals needing homes. However, our mission is also to meet people where they are with grace and compassion.

When an animal is in need and a family is struggling to afford care, we will do our best to help. At the same time, it gives us a vital opportunity to open hearts and educate: with so many incredible pets already waiting for a second chance, there is no need to buy from a breeder.

Let's support each other, share knowledge, and lift up pet owners who are learning along the way! 🐾❤️

If and when it stops raining here in Houston, here's a reminder to protect your pets (and yourself) by draining rain water that's collected outdoors. We don't want to give mosquitos any more places to breed.

Unfortunately, because of our climate and plentiful mosquitos, heartworms are a common problem for dogs, especially for the street dogs who have to live outdoors. Let's do what we can about the problem, starting at home.

Shout out to Eastwood neighbors Victor, Baird, Melanie and the Precent 6 constables office (Sgt. Lopez and Ofc. Vollenweider) for rescuing a kitten that was trapped in a storm drain. They worked for close to two hours to save the kitten’s life. Here's the story:

Residents heard meowing from an inside gutter. A kitten was inside about 6 feet down. They tried lifting the grate but it was on there very tight. Then they tried luring the kitten into a bucket with food. The kitten would enter the bucket but as soon as they started pulling in the rope to lift bucket, he would jump out. With the help of metal objects, crowbars, they managed to lift the manhole cover that is next to the gutter/storm drain. That’s when the officer went down and got the little guy.

Thank you to all the neighbors who came out and helped lift the manhole cover so Ofc. Vollenweider could go down and pull the kitten out! The kitten was adopted by the dispatch operator who sent the constables out to help. The last pic is from the kitten’s new guardian. She bathed him and sent a photo.

Sad side note: we think the mama cat might have been the cat that was hit and killed by a car last week :(

Way to go Eastwood neighbors! Thank you for saving the kitten and helping find it a good home.

When Delia spotted this sweet pup wandering the streets looking for safety, she wanted to help, but on a limited income, taking on a new pet felt impossible.

With rising costs making it harder for so many families, Delia reached out to us for help. Fortunately, we were able to cover Chica's vetting and Delia was able to take her into her home.

Now, Chica is living the sweet life with a cozy bed and toys, safe from the dangers of the street. 🐾

Partnerships like this keep pets out of harm's way and families together. Thank you for supporting our work and helping us keep dogs off the streets!

💛 We appreciate any support you may be able to give to not only Chica's care but the many others like her. You can also give at https://barriodogs.org/donate/.

We often talk about how much it means to keep pets and their familias together, and stories like this show exactly why.

Back in July, Estela reached out asking if we knew of any places accepting owner surrenders. She hadn't made up her mind yet, but was exploring her options. Sensing how heavy this decision was on her heart, we asked if there was anything we can do to help them stay together?

Estela shared that finances were the problem. Her 11-year-old dog, Sophie, needed x-rays, bloodwork, and arthritis medicine that she just couldn't afford right then. Thankfully, we were able to offer to cover Sophie's vet visit and a few months of her medication. Last week, Estela texted us filled with relief and gratitude, sharing what a tremendous help it was and how much better she feels knowing her girl is taken care of.

Stories like this are a reminder of why our mission to keep pets and their familias together is such a vital lifeline in our community. If you would like to help us support future families, please donate below or go to www.barriodogs.org/donate.
