It is with profound sadness that the Institute for Latino Studies shares the passing of our founding director, Dr. Gilberto Cárdenas, on July 26, 2026 at the age of 79.

Dr. Cárdenas served as ILS director from its founding in 1999 until 2012. A pioneering sociologist, scholar, and advocate for Latino communities, he shaped the Institute through visionary leadership and an enduring commitment to education, scholarship, the arts, and community engagement.

His legacy lives on in the students, faculty, and programs that continue to thrive because of his vision. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Dolores Carrillo García, family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The Notre Dame Glee Club is a 65-voice all-male choir with a 100+ year tradition that performs a wide range of music both on campus and around the world on our domestic and international tours (as well as in dozens of informal performances at University events). They are holding auditions during Welcome Weekend prior to the start of classes, and they encourage anyone and everyone to audition--no prior singing experience required! A huge thank you to Pete Sampson for coming out to Great Heights Brewing last night to give us the ultimate inside scoop on Notre Dame Football! We had a fantastic turnout, great conversations, and delicious brews. Thanks to everyone who joined us and made the evening so special.
