A sweet thank you to Dessert Gallery Bakery & Cafe! ❤️ They made and donated these custom cookies for Mahjong with Friends, each one finished with our event name and logo. They were as delicious as they were beautiful. Thank you for sharing your talent with us and for supporting Houston youth.

Our first "Lit Fest" gave kids and families a full day of reading and play! 😍 Youth who completed Literacy Uplifts, our summer reading program, took home trophies and Barbara Bush Branch Library signed families up for library cards so the reading can keep going at home! 🙌 In between, Friends read aloud and plenty of kids went home with a painted face to remember the day!

WE APPRECIATE YOU! Thank you to Lawren for leading the day, Wingdom Grill&Wings for bringing their food truck, and to every partner who helped make it happen. We're already looking forward to next year!

🫶 Thank you to everyone who made our second annual Mahjong with Friends such a special afternoon. Guests filled Houston Country Club for lunch, Mahjong, and friendly competition, and together raised $81,000 for Houston youth!

💙 We’re grateful to our planning committee, Nancy Atlas, Katherine Chambers, Annie Eifler, Gayatri Garg, Debbie Karakowsky, Suzanne McCarthy, and Judy Schuler, and to our table hosts, sponsors, and the local businesses who donated auction packages. 🀄 Thank you to Mahjaholic Lacy Miclette Price for running the games, and to the Houston Country Club for hosting us.

We’re almost there! We’re just $19,000 away from our $100,000 goal, with one week to get there! Every dollar supports the professional mentors who walk alongside our kids for 12+ years, no matter what.

Our kids called the shots on this one. Steffon and Lawren led an affirmation music video project where every youth had a real production role, from Director to Wardrobe to Camera Crew. Their Friends stepped in as assistants, and our young Director took it from there. The finished video is full of lines they chose themselves. I am creative. I am loved. I am confident.

On their first outing with their Friend Gabriel, Corey and Josiah kept asking him to switch between English and Spanish as fast as he could. Then they asked, a little timidly, if they could learn to speak both fluently one day. Gabriel told them their curiosity would get them there. He put on José Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad" and said, "That journey starts today."

It was 95 degrees in June, and the three of them sang every wrong lyric down 59 South anyway. As they later agreed, Christmas isn't a season. It's a state of mind. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we're celebrating the languages our kids are growing into, one song at a time.

Thanks to the Astros Foundation, three of our families spent an evening at the ballpark cheering on the Houston Astros. Everyone had a great time, and the team is headed to the postseason as AL West champs. We'll be watching!

Some stories are worth reading twice. During Read with Friends this spring, our youth enjoyed Tiny T-Rex and the Impossible Hug, and one of our sessions read it again in Spanish. It's a book about kindness and not giving up on hard things, and it landed just as well in both languages. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we're celebrating the voices and cultures that shape our community and the kids we get to read with.

To celebrate Luna and Taylor’s birthdays, their Friends Zeyanna and Lawren organized a trip to Houston Interactive. The girls invited Marisol and Zuri to join them, making it a proper girls day out. Not only did they get to meet a whole lot of new animals, they even got to pet and feed some of them! Everyone rated it a 10 out of 10.

Our favorite picture from the day is the last one. It’s a true depiction of the strong relationships that we’re building with our youth, and that they’re building with one another. Friendships like theirs are one of the quietest gifts of this work.

Happy work anniversary to our Program Director, Lourdes Carrillo! Two years in and we're grateful every day for the depth of experience and care she brings to our team. Lourdes has spent over 30 years in social work, with specialized training in early childhood trauma and trauma-informed care. It shows in how she supports our mentors, our youth, and our families.
