Congratulations, Mr. Royce Williams.

Tonight during the State of the Union, our nation paused to honor extraordinary courage.

The United States Navy proudly recognizes Capt. Elmer Royce Williams (Ret.), Medal of Honor recipient. His heroism embodies the fighting spirit and enduring legacy of the United States Navy.

We are pleased that our Legend and Heroes, Capt. Royce Williams was recognized for his service during the Korean War. In November 1952, over Korea, he engaged 7 Soviet MiGs in a dogfight. The engagement lasted 35 minutes, and he shot down 4 MiGs. This mission was kept classified because the enemy pilots were Soviet, not North Korean. Last night at the State of the Union Address, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Trump. Mr. Williams was a participant at the Wings Over Houston Airshow in 2019. Congratulations and thank you for your service.

On this day, February 23, 1944, the Invasion of Iwo Jima began. The island was captured on March 26, 1944. The cost was high in American lives. The cost was 6821 killed and 18000 wounded. The airfield on the Island provided a Base of operations for the US Army Air Force to launch bombing missions over the Japanese homeland. During the fighting, some of the B-29s that received enemy fire were landing on the airfield. We pay tribute today and remember all who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice. We thank all who served, past and present.

ON THIS DAY: In 1945, during World War II, U.S. Marines on Iwo Jima captured Mount Suribachi, where they raised two American flags. https://abcnews.visitlink.me/cQa4CV

On this Veterans Day we are looking back at one of the the purposes of the Wings Over Houston Legends and Heroes tent, which is, to give visitors an opportunity to meet veterans who have served on our behalf. Veterans such as Marine and Iwo Jima survivor Don Graves who greeted guests like Chris, a Wings Over Houston Airshow Insider at this year’s airshow. Chris remarked, “While the air show itself was remarkable, what really made my whole experience unforgettable was the Legends and Heroes tent. To have the opportunity to meet and talk with some of the few brave men of the Greatest Generation that we have left, was awe inspiring.” Thank you Chris for your support in thanking Cpl. Graves, and to all veterans, the Wings Over Houston Legends and Heroes Tent thanks you! 🇺🇸
