These are the words of Joseph Altamirano, a 2025 Excellence in Nursing Bronze Award winner from Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital — and they are a beautiful reminder of why this event exists.

🌟 GSF Scholar Spotlight: Mariangela Cobian Gonzalez, BSN, RN 🌟

This week, we're thrilled to highlight Mariangela Cobian Gonzalez, whose nursing journey is just beginning and it's off to an incredible start!

This past May, Mariangela graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Texas at El Paso College of Nursing with her BSN, and she officially became a registered nurse in July after passing her NCLEX. 🎉 She has since begun working as a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) RN at El Paso Children's Hospital — the only specialty hospital within a 350-mile radius equipped to care for complex pediatric cases in the borderland. In her new role, she's building her skills in assessing, managing, and caring for patients with rapidly changing conditions in high-acuity environments.

In her own words:
"I am forever grateful to the Good Samaritan Foundation Scholarship Committee and community. It was through your financial support and additional efforts that I was able to complete nursing school. I truly appreciate this support, and I hope to one day pay it forward and make the same kind of difference in another nursing student's life as you did with mine."

Her advice to future nursing students:
"Time management is so important, even now post-nursing school with education classes and full-time shifts, especially in balancing your wellbeing and work."

Congratulations, Mariangela! We're so proud of everything you've accomplished, and we can't wait to see all that's ahead for you! 💙

🌟 GSF Scholar Spotlight: LaTashia Gardner, BSN, RN 🌟

This week, we're honored to highlight LaTashia Gardner, whose story is a powerful testament to perseverance, purpose, and the difference scholarship support can make.

LaTashia was a recipient of the Good Samaritan Scholarship in both 2020 and 2021, all while raising her three sons and navigating significant financial challenges during nursing school. Thanks to that support, she was able to graduate debt-free — a milestone that truly changed the trajectory of her life and career. Today, she works in a Level IV maternity unit caring for high-risk antepartum and postpartum mothers and infants, and she's currently pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing, with graduation set for this fall! 🎉 Her long-term goal is to help reduce maternal and infant mortality rates within her community.

In her own words: "Because of this scholarship, I was able to graduate debt-free, which truly changed the trajectory of my life and career."

Her advice to future nursing students: "Find a specialty that you are truly passionate about, as this will allow you to not only love what you do but also feel a strong sense of purpose in your work every day."

🌟 GSF Scholar Spotlight: Katy Ferrero, MSN, RN 🌟

This week, we're delighted to highlight Katy Ferrero, who has spent nearly 11 years caring for some of the tiniest, most vulnerable patients across Texas.
As a NICU nurse, Katy has had the privilege of caring for countless babies and families throughout her career. She recently completed her MSN in Health Informatics, opening the door to a new area she plans to explore next in her nursing journey! 🎉

In her own words: "This scholarship helped me tremendously in achieving my goal because it helped ease the financial stress that surrounds going off to college and paying off student loan debt! Starting out with less debt and receiving support from this scholarship helps set students up for success."

Her advice to future nursing students: "The field of nursing is so special. Follow your heart and remember why you chose this profession in the first place. School is hard and can have you questioning everything at times, but you must remember why you're there and what your goal is! We truly have the ability to save lives and make a difference every single shift. That is priceless!"
