Peace In A Time of Unrest...

Before you start reading this devotional, take a moment to stop what you’re doing, slow down and focus on Jesus.

Ask God to open your eyes to see as you read the scriptures, and to open your ears to hear
Wait on the leading of the Spirit.

Philippians 4v4-9:

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”
The biggest battles we face in life happen in our minds. In moments of constant pressure and uncertainty we often find that our minds become places that are overrun by the burden of our cares and worries. The crisis this world currently finds itself in presents plenty of reasons for our minds to be filled with fear and anxiety.

It would be unhealthy for us to deny that the times we are living in are tough. They are difficult, they are hard, they are uncertain. God doesn’t call us to pretend that our circumstances and situations are picture perfect, but he does call us to pray in the midst of the chaos and confusion.

When we come to God in prayer with our praise, petitions and requests he offers us a peace that surpasses all understanding as he guards our hearts and minds in Jesus.
Rejoicing in God does not mean that we cannot be real with God about our pain, struggles, fears, doubts and questions during this time.
We can ask him for his peace in a time of
Unrest

STOP PRETENDING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE...
1 Kings 14:1-15:24 (additional reading: Psalm 133:1-3 and Proverbs 17:7-8)

Who are you? Really, who are you? You can fool the pastor, the Sunday school teachers, counsellors, and the people you work and live around, but your disguise that covers the sins that no one knows about is seen by the one that really matters, God. He knows you better than you know yourself. The Bible tells us that even hairs on your head are numbered. The things that we do to try to impress people really doesn’t matter.

We somehow develop the knowledge to hide the things we know are wrong, and try to make them look better, take for instance, when we were told to clean our rooms, instead we pushed everything underneath the bed or into the draws, so at least it looked good, even though in reality it is still a big mess.

It’s time for us to sort things out spiritually. We read today that the son of Jeroboam was very ill. All the time Jeroboam is misleading the tribes of Israel in the wrong direction, and doctrine, yet he knows the true direction to go, he knows who the true God is, he knows who can heal his son, The one and only true God of Israel. So Jeroboam afraid that someone might see him, tells his own wife to disguise herself, and take some bread and honey and go to the prophet Ahijah in hopes that his son may be healed.

What Jeroboam did not know is that although Ahijah the Prophet was blind, God already spoke to Ahijah and told him Jeroboam’s wife was coming, and had disguised herself to be another person, not only that but had some bad news for Jeroboam. As Jeroboam’s wife went to Shilo and entered into the room were Ahijah was, he heard her footsteps and said to her, why are you pretending to be someone you are not? God knew who was behind the disguise, Ahijah didn’t need his sight, All he needed was God.

Who are we pretending to be today? Are we trying to fool God by our actions? Let’s be true to God. It's our reasonable service.

Jealousy and Rivalry...

“If you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.”- James 3:14-16 NKJV

The world is filled with disorder and evil. Everywhere we look, we see the results of sin. What happens when people turn their backs on God and disobey His Word. We see wars and violence. Divisions and conflicts. People who steal and deceive. We see this in politics and government. In business and shopping. In our communities and even our churches.

The Bible tells us that these conditions are encouraged when we have bitterness, envy, and ambition in our hearts. But it is important to recognize that these problems have a spiritual root, for this kind of wisdom is “earthly, sensual, demonic.”

Many Christians fall prey to this devil-inspired deception. How easily we can get caught up in the pressures of this world! We can say things that foster rivalries and jealousy. We can be judgmental, and be filled with condemnation.

But the wisdom that comes from God is different. It is “first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.” This is the kind of wisdom that all of us should pursue. And if we want to be peacemakers, we “will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of goodness.”

Today, ask God to give you His wisdom. Remember that this wisdom is always pure, peaceful, gentle, and easy to please. If you are filled with God’s wisdom, you will be ready to help those who are troubled and to do good for others. And you will sow seeds of love, kindness, and mercy into the lives of others.

He promises that, if you “work for peace in a peaceful way,” you will reap a harvest of goodness.

Father, reveal if I have any selfishness and jealousy in my heart. Free me from competitive spirits.
