Project Row Houses

Project Row Houses Project Row Houses is a community platform that enriches lives through art with an emphasis on cultural identity and its impact on the urban landscape.

PRH began in 1993 as a result of discussions among African-American artists who wanted to establish a positive, creative presence in their own community. Artist and community activist Rick Lowe spearheaded the pursuit of this vision when he discovered the abandoned 1 1/2 block site of twenty-two shotgun-style houses in Houston’s Third Ward. The shotgun houses became the perfect opportunity to purs

ue the creation of a new form of art. They had two key elements: 1) a beautiful form recognized by the renowned Houston artist Dr. John Biggers to be filled with architectural, spiritual, and social significance, and 2) a need for social action among the community to bring the project to life. PRH is founded on the principle that art-and the community it creates-can be the foundation for revitalizing depressed inner-city neighborhoods. This principle was is in part based on the philosophy of German artist Joseph Beuys (1921 – 1986) who coined the phrase “social sculpture,” which transformed the idea of sculpture as an art form into a social activity. Thus, the mission of Project Row Houses is to create community through the celebration of art, African American history and culture. PRH has established programs that encompass arts and culture, neighborhood revitalization, low-income housing, education, historic preservation, and community service. These programs are inspired by the work of world renowned artist Dr. John Biggers (1924 – 2001) and his principles concerning the creation of effective communities, specifically:

Art and creativity should be viewed as an integral part of life, exemplified in African traditions wherein art is interwoven into the very fabric of life through rituals and ceremony activities.Quality education is defined through impartation of knowledge and wisdom – including understanding that is passed from generation to generation. Strong neighborhoods have social safety nets, woven by community to support community and to raise social responsibility
Good and relevant architecture; meaning housing that should not only be well designed, but also make sense to preserve a community’s historic character.

We feel seen! Project Row Houses shares deep appreciation to the Ruth Foundation for the Arts for the honor of being included in the 2025–2028 Core Grant program.

Project Row Houses feels a deep kinship to the nearly 200 other institutions who share this honor with us, and to Ruth Foundation for the Arts. We all share a commitment to community and conversation that creates space for artists to step up and branch out.

Two of our team members had the opportunity to visit Milwaukee for the opening and first unboxing for “Original Order Order Original: The Art and Archives of Bettina,” and they have not stopped talking about the experience, particularly the people they met.

Thank you, Ruth Arts, for welcoming us into your orbit and being part of our community of practice. Onward together!

Project Row Houses offers an artist residency program that provides subsidized studio space for up to three years on site. This residency supports artists by giving them affordable space to create, experiment, and grow their practice while being part of the vibrant Third Ward community.

PRH has announced Nathaniel Donnett as one of their newest Artists in Residence!

Nathaniel Donnett, born in Houston, Texas, is a cultural practitioner whose work holds philosophical and psychological significance. Donnett explores Black aesthetics, the everyday, and social precarity across media, including painting, sculpture, installation, sound, video, and community projects. Using abstraction, Black musicality, science fiction, and vernacular audio and visual languages, he recontextualizes materials, objects, and spatial environments to challenge linear timeline narratives. Through polyrhythmic methods, such as collage and (re)arrangements, Donnett emphasizes the cosmology of Black American phenomena, the African diaspora, and beyond, which he calls Dark Imaginerance.

PRH has announced Tay Butler as one of their newest Artists in Residence!

As a Project Row House Artist-in-Residence, Tay will join other artists in creating  NEWBAM, the New Black Arts Movement. Rooted in the radical traditions of the Black Arts Movement of the mid-1960s, yet forward-looking and in community with other Black Arts Movements in Houston and globally, the NEWBAM will organize a hub to help artists avert their gaze away from individual market-driven goals and  towards Black consciousness and solidarity.
