Scary but we all need to be aware - not just children elope. Adults with autism and intellectual disabilities elope also.

Six autistic children have died in just the last seven days after eloping.

Six children. Seven days.

Let that sink in.

This is not a minor safety concern.

This is not something we can keep talking about only after another child is missing.

For families of autistic children who are at risk of elopement, every single day can carry the fear of a child getting out unnoticed, running toward a road, wandering into a body of water, or entering another dangerous situation.

And when a child is nonspeaking or unable to understand danger, the stakes can be even higher.

The National Autism Safety Council reports that drowning is the leading cause of death following autism-related wandering and elopement, and emphasizes that every minute matters when a child goes missing.

We need urgency.
We need prevention.
We need trained first responders.
We need schools and caregivers to have emergency plans.
We need communities to understand that a missing autistic child is an emergency.
And we need people to SEARCH WATER FIRST.

These aren't statistics.

They are children.
They are someone's son.
Someone's daughter.
Someone's entire world.

We cannot wait for another family to receive the phone call.
