I might use a filter for fun, but I could never be fake 🤏🏾
My mama used to tell me every day, “Be kind.”
I carried those words with me throughout my life.
Unfortunately, kindness doesn’t just attract kind people. It attracts mean girls too.
It attracts people who mistake kindness for weakness.
People who enjoy what you have to offer but secretly resent you.
People who will smile at your table while rooting against you when they leave it.
People convinced they can do a better job than you, be a better leader than you, be a better friend than you, be a better mom than you, or even a better partner than you.
That revelation disappointed me more than I can explain because I don’t know how to pretend. If I have a problem with someone, they’ll know it. If I don’t fool with somebody, I simply don’t fool with them. I don’t have the energy to fake relationships or collect people just to say I have company. So if I don’t rock with you…I don’t want anything from you. I’m not coming anywhere with you. I’m not accepting anything from you. And I don’t have anything for you. That simple.
But anywho, their character is not my assignment.
Mine is.
So I’ll keep choosing kindness… with a little more discernment than I had before.
My mama was still right though and I don’t ever wanna disappoint my mama again. 😇
